The Indian novelist explained that there are 14 languages re- cognized by the ,constitution plus at least 150 others that have their own literature. "Some are writ- ten left to right, as in English,", Singh said, "and some are written right to left. Others aren't written at all and are still rich in litera- ture. Evaluations of writing are often colored by the rivalry between different language groups who are trying to promote their own cul- tures, Singh added. "There is a legend. that the Hindus were trying to claim that their culture, was very old, even older than the ancient Chinese. temple and very deep in the earth, they found a rusted steel wire, and proclaimed it as evidence that the early Hindus had knowledge of the telephone. "The Muslims had to equal that claim, so they started digging near a mosque. They dug and dug but didn't find anything, so they an- nounced that as evidence that their ancestors had known about the wireless telegraph." Prose, the novel, short story, and drama, must be able to stand the ,test of translation. Poetry has never been able to'do this, he said. Once a work has been translat- ed, especially into English, its re- ception in that language must be considered. "Publishing, with its expenses and small rewards, is so very bad in India that no In- dian will publish first in his own country. He will publish abroad, and judges will note how the work has been received." Haimson To Speak On Russian Revolt Prof. Leopold H.
