THE MICHIGAN DAILY w _.. i ompares Buddhism, Atheism NDEA Aids 'WITNESS FOR PEACE': 'U' Students Quakers Maintain Vigil Outside Pentagon I The Indians believe -in trans- migration, or the transfer of the spirit after death. They consider revelation, or Buddist "Nirvana," as a release from their involve- ment in lower states. Some early groups believed that certain people went to a paradise after they had worked up to a state of "goodness," Wayman said. It was only a temporary escape, he added, because when they had "used up" their reward, they fell back into a lower state. Stay in World Later Buddhists still recognized the possibility of escape, but pre- ferred to remain in the world im- bued with compassion for the suf- fering of others. A present group, the equivalent of Zen Buddhism in China, is not concerned with "attaining a realm, beyond time, but to obtain the secret of the present," he said. With Loans The University has loaned un- der the National Defense Educa- tion Act program $602,515 to 842 individuals since the program started in February, 1959, Assist- ant Dean of Men John Bingley said yesterday. The University has received and loaned $250,000 of the $1,864,389 allotted under the program for Michigan's 41 colleges and uni- versities for this year. The NDEA loan program has been attacked because of its loy- alty oath and disclaimer affidav- it requirement. Although some universities have withdrawn from the program be- cause of their objections to the affidavit, this University would not do so because such action would deny many students an op- portunity to go to college, Bing- ley said. No student who applied for an NDEA loan here had questioned the disclaimer affidavit, he said, but he did not know how many students who would otherwise have applied did not bother be- cause of the affidavit. A bill which proposed replace- ment of the affidavit with crim- inal penalties for students who accept NDEA loans while members of the Communist Party or any o t h e r subversive organization which was supported by Presi- dent Harlan Hatcher, died in Congress this summer. < > MUSKET 1960 I presents 4 council institutes.
