Excitement mounts as the re-
turns pour in at the Democratic
headquarters in Detroit.
An early wave of Wayne Coun-
ty votes pushes Lieutenant-Gov-
ernor John B. Swainson to the
front in his race with Republican
Paul D. Bagwell.
But the outstate ballots are yet
to be tabulated and here the story
of the outcome will be told. Bag-
well closes the gap.
Reporters and Swainson sup-
porters in the Detroit Henrose
Hotel headquarters urge the Dem-
ocratic nominee to proclaim vic-
tory. But he is reluctant to act
until the outstate count is virtual-
ly completed or his opponent has
conceded.
Four o'clock in the morning
comes and still no word. Lieuten-
ant-Governor Swainson goes to
bed, awaiting the final outcome.
Tomorrow he will drop the "lieu-
tenant" from his title.
