Space Race 'Obsession'
May Waste Manpower

"America's continued obsessiont
with the space race as a political
struggle may scientifically bank-
rapt the country and result in a
vast waste of manpower," Prof.
Richard B. Morrison of the aero-
nautical engineering departmentE
said yesterday.
Speaking at a luncheon meeting
of the American Institute of
Chemical Engineers, Prof. Morri-
son said America needs to reevalu-
ate its program from a scientific,
rather than a political, viewpoint.

terday by Ted Parnall, '63, and
Dennis Shafer, '63.
They joined Lynn Bartlett, '63,
and Philip Power, Grad., wtio had
already secured petitions.
The new SGC Committee on
Membership in Student Organiza-
tions closed its petitioning yes-
terday as Wallace K. Sagendorph,
'61, and Joe Luttrell, '63, took out
the last petitions.

fields instead of leaving them be-
hind in America's best fields," he
claimed.
Russians Lead
Russia has taken a lead on
emphasis on heavy warheads and
payloads, or the weight which an
aircraft can carry, Prof. Morrison
explained, because they began
these programs years before the
United States.
"The United States has sent up
instruments which have scientific
capabilities the Russians can't
match," said Prof. Morrison, "and
this is what we should concentrate
on," he added.
Prof. 'Morrison explained that
emphasis on a big payload is
wasteful from a scientific point
of view and noted that the mis-
siles Jupiter, Redstone, Atlas and
Titan are all military rockets.
Probe High Altitudes
"The idea of the University's
Rambler project was an inexpen-
sive, high altitude probe for pure-
ly scientific reasons with a light
satellite."
Prof. Morrison said that this
type of probe should be done more
often in the United States, but
commented that such a simple
probe "is against the American
crash program."
A result of this crash program
policy, Prof. Morrison claimed,
has been such wasteful projects as
the $9 million Atlas Able failure
which was "seeking data which
could have been obtained by a
less extravagant instrument."
Perhaps one reason for Russia's
lead over America in the space
race is "the American lack of
courage in trying new ideas in a
motor system," Prof. Morrison
said.

performance at 8:30 p.m. tomor-
