Michigan's new Girls Speed
Swimming Club "dived off the
board" last night with their first
meeting attended by more than 20
tankers interested in becoming
top swimmers under the guidance
of Mrs. Rosemary (Mann) Daw-
son.
Mrs. Dawson is the Club's fac-
ulty advisor and wife of Btuck
Dawson, team manager. She also
is the daughter of Matt Mann, the
former Michigan (for 30 years)
and Olympic Coach, who serves as
advisory coach.
Actually, quite a few of the girls
already have made their mark na-
tionally, and locally, so will prob-
ably not need much introduction
to the water.
They include Joan Spillane, a
freshman from Houston, Tex. who
won an Olympic Gold Medal this
year at Rome, in addition to being
a world record holder; Sue Rog-
ers, also a frosh, from Ashburn-
ham, Mass., who holds the Amer'-
ican record for both the 100 and
250 yard breaststroke; Sperry
Jones, a Junior, and National
Junior Crawl Champion from Ok-
lahoma City; Pat 'Trimmer, soph-
omore, former AAU All American

open their season next weekend
with two games against Canadian
opponents.

a four game tour of the West
Coast, along with meeting some
of the finest teams in the country
at Wines Field.
