3Y, SETEMBER 30, 1960 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE'r PLACEMENT FOR ENGINEERS: Report Increased Salaries, Opportunities For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'til 11:30 A.M. 3I 'p I, An increased demand for Uni- versity engineering graduates in the research* and development areas, higher salaries and greater opportuniitites for summer train- ing jobs have been noted in a report from the engineering place- ment office. The Annual Report of Engineer- ing Placement, covering the period from July 15, 1959, to July 16, 1960, also reported trends toward -- - - - - - - - - - - - - more available positions in the Midwest, reversing a recent trend to the West Coast. The report showed an increase in starting Jobs instead of specific assignments and an increase in the number of graduates starting with medium-sized rather than large organizations. It was noted that students stepped up their efforts to find employment. Employers often com- mented on the good conduct and preparedness of students in job interviews, the report said. The proportion of graduates entering the armed forces rose 45 per cent, from 11 per cent to 16 per cent of the total number, according to the report. This year the increase in total degrees was only 3 per cent, however, as con- trasted with 18 per cent the year before. playtex living'bras... bewitching in black! completely colorfast Even if you wash them together with white, Playtex Living Bras ore guaranteed not to run or bleed Only Playtex Living Bras use elastic like this to stretch in every direction your body moves .. . yet always stay in place: Bias-cut side panels move with you . . . breathe with you. The Bachelor of Science figure was up only 2.3 per cent compared with an in- crease of 9.5 per cent for the Master of Science and 2 per cent for the doctoral graduate totals. Students received an average of five offers each and 50 per cent of them accepte dthe highest offer. Sixty per cent of the graduates located in the Midwest, of whom 39 per cent located in Michigan. Nineteen per cent located in the East, 16 per cent in the West and 5 per cent elsewhere. Thirty-three per cent entered training programs, 35 per cent chose research and development, 21 per cent design or systems, 7 per cent operations production, 3 per cent sales and 1 per cent teaching. Committee Maps Agenda For Problems The literary college steering committee yesterday decided on a tentative agenda for their dis- cussions this year. The topics they propose to dis- cuss include: Cheating, the hon- ors program and its place in the college, the problems coming from the use of teaching fellows, oppor- tunities for independent study and the possibility of a science survey course for non-honors stu- dents. One of the proposals they will discuss in the cheating area was one made by James Seder, '61, their chairman, to consider the possibility of establishing a stu- dent -group somewhat similar to the Joint Judiciary Council to hear cheating offenses.
