PAPER-BOU ND BOOKS 50 Publishers Represented PROMPT SERVICE On Special Orders OVERBECK'S BOOKSTORE NAACP Discusses Rush, Off-Campus Housing Two issues, that of Negro par- ticipation in men's rush, and dis- crimination in off-campus hous- ing, were discussed at a meeting of the Campus chapter of NAACP recently. Brereton Bissell, '61, vice-presi- dent of the group, pointed out that since Student Government Council last year prohibited any To Interview For Positions Petitioning for the Central Committee of Spring Weekend is now open. Interested students may pick up petitions in the Union Students Offices from 2 to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Petitioning closes October 3. All applicants must sign up for interviews. The Central Committee will con- sist of one treasurer and two of eight other offices. student organization, from dis- criminating against minority groups, Negroes and foreign stu- dents can rush and-pledge with- out discrimination, Bart Burkhalter, '60E, a mem- ber of the SGC Human Relations Board, said that it is impossible to force a local fraternity to take a Negro member unless it wants to, since rushing involves personal feelings and it is difficult to de- termine why a member of a mi- nority group is rejected. However, if the local chapter of a fraternity does want to pledge a Negro but the national chapter or some other member chapter stops it then the University may have grounds to take legal action against the national chapter. In the case of off-campus hous- ing, Gary Burneske, who was re- cently appointed to the NAACP Campus Board, urged any mem- ber of a minority group who was discriminated against to report it immediately to the Human Rela- tions Board in the SAB.
