BRUBECK QUARTET: Jazz Players Roam Country =".." For Direct Classified Ad, Service, Phone NO 2-4786 By JUJDITH SATThERY The Dave Brubeck !Quartet is a fast-moving group. The members gathered from Connecticu~t, California and New York; moving just as quickly, they left for different parts of the country immediately after the per- formance. At intermission, the. men came bounding off the stage. Brubeck and bassist Eugene Wright heldI a quick conference about Wright's plane time and the timing of thej performance.1 Wright proceeded to make ar- raig; inents for a ride to the air- port for himself and his bass--in a small foreign car. in a room backstage, drummer Joe Morello, gesturing nervously, asked saxophonist Paul Desmond, "Well, did we wrap it up or are we going to go back on?" Desmond idly fingered his sax, replied that they would go on again. The two men then made quick, sketchy arrangements for the next numbers. Brubeck finished plane arrange- FLITSfancied the most ments, strode into a small room and dropped into 'a chair. "Jazz is no different from other music, Brubeck said. "The same things are the components of all of it-harmony, rhythm, melody, and form. "Early jazz copied march form, melody and harmony. The only new things were the African rhy- thms; and the spontaneous im- provisation. "In the clash of Western Euro- pean and African musical cultures in 'America, the strongest elements of each survived : melodies and harmonies of Europe, and the rhythms of Africa," he explained. Someone stuck his head in the door. "Five minutes, Mr. Bru- beck," he said. Brubeck nodded. "Anid the improvisation in jazz is not new, either," Brubeck con- tinued. "We're going back, and keeping alive a lost classical form. In Mozart's time, musicians were expected to improvise in perform- ances and we do the same thing." "Two minutes, Mr. Brubeck," someone called. Brubeck hurried out of the room into the hall, where Desmond and the others were gathered. They stood a mo- ment, waiting nervously. Then the door to the stage opened and the four were on again. Union To""0Hold Turyouts Today I U, BOARDERS: Breakfast per weep~. NO -6247.
