RTUl 'Wii.Kih~TfimlT Victories Mark Netters Triumph a *lIfl&Dr V.1 50U1J 1 AIm In the tradition of David and Goliath, Truman and Dewey, and Lord Nelson and the Spanish Ar- mada, Michigan's tennis squad scored an upset over Indiana to take the Big Ten championship away from the favored defending titlist. The Wolverine men in white fought their way through the con- ference dual meet season losing only one meet to enter the cham- pionship tournament just one point behind the Hoosiers. Then in the tourney last weekend the netmen won the matches they were supposed to win plus a few they weren't to defeat runner- up Indiana by 15 points. Altogether the six members of the squad took four singles and two doubles titles in play in which equally rated members of each team faced each other. Eight for Murphy It was the eighth conference championship brought to Ann Ar- bor since Bill Murphy became tennis coach 16 years ago. This season was the first in which dual meet victories had a bearing on the championship. Each team played a round-robin schedule and each doubles or sin- gles victory in the dual meet ;ounted as a point toward the crown. Michigan won eight of its nine dual meets-losing only to North- western, 6-3. The netters shut >ut five of their league oppon- ents and lost only one match to two others, amassing a total of 69 match victories and 12 losses. In- diana, whom the Wolverines edg- ed 5-4 in their dual meet, wound up the regular season with a 70-11 record, followed at a distance by Northwestern with a 59-22 mark. Indiana Favored Indiana was favored to take the tourney on the basis of _ the results of the dual meet season and the fact that the nucleus of its championship team had re- turned. On the first day of the confer- ence meet, which was held on the Hoosiers' home court, both of the contenders won all of their match- es in the preliminary round. Mich- igan, however, moved into a first place tie since it played one more matpeh in the prelims because of lower seedings. In the second day of action the netters were faced with three espe- cially crucial matches. Wolverine Karl Hedrick met second-seeded Dave Power of Indiana in first The Wolverines performed ac- cording to form at the other six singles positions and Michigan men advanced to Saturday's fin- als in eight of nine spots. Final Day Entering the final day of ac- tion with a slim three-point lead over the Hoosiers, the Wolverines took six of eight final contests to win the championship in a rout. At third singles, Jon Fraser took three sets to defeat Barry Kane of Indiana, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Sophomore Stewart mauled last year's sixth singles champ, Hoos- ier Chuck Fichter, 6-1, 6-4, to land the fourth singles title. Lowe Wins Hal Lowe whipped MSU's Vic Dhooge, 6-2, 7-5, and George Rus- sell defeated Mike Baer of Indi- ana, 6-3, 6-4, to land the fifth and sixth singles crows, respec- tively. In doubles Fraser and Lowe took the measure of State's Dhooge and Jim Phillips, 8-6, 6-2, for the sec- ond doubles crown, and Flood and Jim Swift beat Fichter and Bob Wham of Indiana, 7-5, 6-3, for the number three title. Michigan's losses came in sec- ond singles and first doubles where Flood lost in three sets to Rod PERSO NAL McNerney of Indiana, 4-6, 6-3, PERONA 6-2, and Hedrick and Stewart ab- POOR STAN DUDEK got so hungry he sorbed a 6-3, 6-3 beating from ate his contact lens; but don't sweat Power and McNerney. it-the same thing happened to Rod- ney Binney when he was a little girl. Northwestern Again In the number one singles Graebner, who is ninth-ranked nationally, defeated Power, 3-6, 6- 4, 6-3. It was the fourth consecu- tive time that a Northwestern player won the first singles crown. Davis-Cupper Marty Riessen was victorious in the three tourneys preceding this one. Two Wolverine singlests, Stew- art and Lowe, went through the Big Ten season and the tourna- ment without a loss and the dou- bles team of Flood and Swift also established an unblemished I record. The Wolverines sustain heavy graduation losses this year as Cap- tain Flood and champions Lowe, Fraser and Russell will depart with diplomas. Returning as sen- iors will be captain-elect Hedrick, Swift and Bo Barker, along with junior-to-be Stewart. TENNIS LESSONS-Grad student with instruction experience. 663-7211. In their annual business meet- ing here, Commissioner Bill Reed said the directors also voted against the use of closed-circuit television for the purpose of study- ing football action during the course of a game. Major League Standings Reed said the action against al- lowing games to be interrupted for television commercials was taken to prevent telecasts from interfering with the normal con- duct of the game. As a result, television sponsors will have to show their commer- cials during the normal lulls of a game. Reed said the new substi- tution rule will cover the 'situa- tion next fall, because the clock is stopped on every kick. "The public has become aware of and sensitive to the guy in the red cap on the sideline," said Reed, referring to television's sys- tem of using a signal for com- mercials to call time out for com- mercials. Reed said the Big Ten has wel- comed and valued television cov- erage, but feels that such coverage should not interfere with the nor- mal conduct of a football game.
