Clay dropped the ex-champ on is back with a solid short right. Sonny rolled over and tried to get up but fell on his back again. Referee Jersey Joe Walcott, the former heavyweight champion, ap- parently could not hear the knock- down time keeper's count. When Sonny got up Jersey Joe let them continue while he checked with officials of the Maine State Box- ng Commission. Stops Fight Informed that the count of 10 had been reached, Walcott im- mediately rushed over and stop- ped the fight.- A chorus of boos rolled from the gathering of some 4500 fans at the tiny high school hockey arena in this textile city. No- body knew for several confusing moments whether the fight was over or not. It was the same sort of eneing that Rocky Marciano and Walcott had in their rematch in Chicago after a furious first. fight. Wal- cott went out quickly in the very first round. Quickest Kayo The quickest previous knockout in a heavy title match was the 1:28 first round knockout scored by Tommy Burns over Jem Roche in Dublin, March 17, 1908. In all there had been 11 previous firs, round endings in the heavyweight class. One quick punch and it was all over. Liston went on his back, rolled over, got to his right knee and then fell on his back. After the sudden ending, Clay oured the ringside yelling "I want oyd Patterson." Boos A chorus of fans yelled "fake, fake, fake," and booed for several rinutes as photographers and others swarmed into the ring. The pattern of the fight was apparent from the opening sec- onds. Clay immediately moved in and threw a right hand to the head and a hook to the jaw, quickly establishing that he was in command. Then he danced away, circling while Liston plod- ded after him flat-footed. Liston managed a short right but missed with a jab as Clay moved away, dancing with his hands down at his side. Clay land- ed a right and then brought up a short right to the jaw and it was all over. Bizarre If possible, this was an even more bizarre ending than their previous match Feb, 25, 1964, when Liston quit in his cornei at the seventh bell, claiming he had damaged his left shoulder. Earlier Clay had tried to quit, claiming he couldn't see. Major League Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE * * * * * * * * '7I' Cindermen: The Spirit Was Willing ! 1 " MICHIGAN DA CLASSIFIED ADVERTIS By TOM WEINBERG Special To The Daily IOWA CITY-Maybe Michigan people are spoiled. But there's good reason for it. When Coach Don Canham's track squad came here for the Big Ten meet, he knew he probably wouldn't have the horses to over- come Michigan State's ,depth and overwhelming speed in the sprints an l hurdles. But when the Wolverines hur- riedly threw their equipment into taxis to catch the plane home Sat- urday afternoon with 43 points- good enough for second place- and three individual titlists, the track buffs knew that Michigan had been in town and third-place Wisconsin felt the heavy six-point gap that the Wolverines built up. Three Titles Proven champion Kent Bernard showed his grace and ability in capturing the 440, Dorie Reid streaked to a crown in the 100, and George Canamare sprung himself into the national limelight with a record-breaking 15'9%" pole vault. But it was more than just the three Michigan champions that Canham could gloat about after two days of action culminated an- other successful season. 'Once more, his charges proved their ability to reach peak performance for the big meet. Add to that the fact that every Michigan point-maker except Ber- nard, third-place half-miler Dan Hughes, and fourth-place hurdler John Henderson will return for at least one more year of competition for the Maize and Blue, and it's enough to spoil anybody. Garner 56 Points Spoiled or not, the smattering of Michigan rooters were forced to witness the awesomer56-point performance negotiated by the Spartans from East Lansing as they picked up their first track title since joining the conference in 1951. With five individual winners, 17 of a possible 30 points in the sprints, and eight more in both the-120-yard high hurdles and the high jump, the Spartans were so far out of reach the meet was sewed up about an hour before the traditional showdown in the mile relay. In fact, Spartan Coach. FrangDittrich was g e n e r o u s enough to share the wealth by scratching his mediocre mile relay squad when he realized his team was out in the clear. Sets World Mark The most outstanding individual performance was by crowd-pleas- ing Iowa sophomore Jon Reimer who bettered the existing world's record in the 330-yard intermed- iate hurdles. Lanky Reimer's time of :36.1 eclipses the mark set by Jim Miller from Colorado two1 years ago. If Reimer's win was the most outstanding on paper, it was Can- amare's showing that excited the7 crowd the most. As usual, the pole; vault started first, and ended last, but Canamare had the centerstage, attention when he failed in all, three of his attempts at 16'1" after all the running events had] ended. With his first try at the formerly magic height, Canamare was over the bar, but fell back, down and knocked it off. The junior from Cedarhurst, N.Y., bettered his own previous best by four inches en route to breaking Wolverine Rod Denhart's three-year old Big Ten record of 'He'll Make It'] After the meet, Canham assert-] ed that Canamare would continue his year-long improvement next month in the nationals. "It's too1 bad George didn't break 16 feet," Canham said. But the harassed coach confidently added, "He'll do it without any trouble on the1 Coast," where the NCAA meet will' be held. Canamare did not place last year in the outdoor meet, but his{ steadily increasing mastery over' the fiber glass rod vaulted him over 21 inches higher than his 14'0" performance a year ago. Bernard only had to fight off an injured leg in streaking to his second 440 crown in a row. Nobody was close to the Trinidad-Tobago Olympian as he loped once around the dry track in :46.6 seconds. 'Won't Let Myself'j The Wolverine captain, who was lauded by his coach for buck~ing a bothersome left ankle, didn't want his leg taped for Saturday's finals. "It hurt me quite a bit be- fore the race," he admitted after- wards, "but once I get going, I won't let myself think about it." The graceful champion coasted across the finish line in Friday's prelims with a noticeable limp, but meet were turned in by Fred pushed himself to repeat his indi- Grove in the 660 and Brian Kelly vidual effort Saturday in the anti- in the mile. Both of the under- climatic mile relay when he darted classmen came through with times LINES 2 3 4 1 DAY 3 DAY away from his nearest challenger, to handily capture the first heat' of the event with a leg of :46.2 unofficially. According to Canham, the only reason the Wolverines finished second to Iowa in the relay was because the Hawkeyes were in the other heat. Iowa's team ran the distance in 3:12.1, :.09 better than Hughes, Cecil Norde, Bob Gero- metta and Bernard had posted in the first heat. Norde and Gerometta them- selves added two points each to the Wolverine cause with fourths in the 880 and 660 respectively. Reid Takes 100 Flashy halfback Reid bucked an eight-mile an hour wind in zoom- ing to the third and final Wolver- ine title in ten seconds flat. Reid ran a :09.5 on Friday to qualify for the finals, but could go the 100 yards in :10.0 on Saturday and still come out unscathed, even though Garrett was stiff compe- tition, clocking :10.0 as well. Two other performances that typified the Wolverines' anticipat- ed adrenalin surge in the Big Ten that far outstripped their previous bests. Grove, a sophomore who is gradually becoming accustomed to the 660-yard distance, as opposed to his original event, the half mile, picked up four valuable points with his second place fin- ish. His time of 1:18.8 was a sec- ond slower than lightning-fast Jim Harris of Northwestern, and one-tenth second better than the Iowans' sentimental favorite of the day, two-year half-mile cham- pion Bill Frazier, who is still re- covering from an injury he sus- tained last year. Collected Saturday The remaining six Wolverine points were collected in the field events Saturday. Sophomore shot- putter Jack Harvey wound up third to Tom Barnes of Minnesota and Bob Freimuth of Wisconsin with his throw of 53'33%". Junior Bob Densham struggled with a dislocated bone and still managed fourth place in the high jump. And sophomore weight-man Steve Leuchtman got a point for heav- ing the 16-pound ball 51'33/4". 70 .85 1.00 1.95 2.,40 2.85 LY PERSONAL TENNIS LESSONS-Grad student with ING RAT ES instruction experience. 663-7211.
