Monday through Friday, and Saturday 10:00 'til 11:30 A.M. By TOM WEINBERG Special To The Daily IOWA CITY, Iowa - Michigan Coach Don Canham was encour- aged by his team's performance in the preliminaries yesterday, but Michigan's 10 qualifiers for to- day's finals are still two fewer than Michigan State has, and the Spartans are now the odds-on fav- orite to win the first Big Ten track title in their history. With the broad jump and discus titles completed yesterday after- noon, Michigan State leads with eight points. Illinois showed its shallow strength and has seven, while Wisconsin, with an outside chance, is third with six. Michigan is lodged in seventh place with a single point earned by Rich Don- nelly's fifth place heave of 159'8" in the discus. MSU with 12 qualifiers, includ- ing three each in the 220- and 330-yard hurdles, leads the pack as the teams go into the finals and events for which there were no preliminaries. The 10 Wolver- ine qualifiers put them in second, while Wisconsin with nine and Iowa with eight are right behind. Surprises Yesterday's action saw the Wol- verines show up with a few sur- prises and a few anticipated top- flight performances. Trinidad Olympian Kent Ber- nard started the afternoon with an easy win in the 440 prelims despite running under the bur- den of a heavily taped left leg. The senior captain won his heat by five yards with the best time of the day, :47.8. Burly junior Dorie Reid pulled off one of the shockers in the 100 as he took his heat in phenomenal time of :09.5, just .1 off Jesse Owens' 20-year-old record. Reid, who later waltzed into the 220 finals, pulled away in front with a quick start and was never chal- lenged. More Left "I had more left," Reid said after the race. The junior half- back will be pressed today in the finals by Jim Garrett of MSU, the newly crowned Big Ten broad jump king. In the two field events that were completed yesterday, only Donnelly could put the Wolverines on the scoreboard. Bogie Redmon, a lanky Collins- was pleased with his team's status, ville, Ill., all-Big Ten basketball but pointed out MSU's depth in player, won the discus for the the events where Michigan quali- Illini on his last attempt with a fied. throw of 167'32/2". Purdue with 726 and Michigan with 728 are way in front of their conference foes. Indiana and Ohio State, both rated above the Wol- verines, shot 744 and 752 respec- tively to hold down the third and fourth spots. Michigan placed two men be- sides Newton in the top ten after yesterday's rounds. Jim Evashev- ski fired a 71-72-143 for second place and brother Frosty holds down the tenth spot with a 71- 75-146. The Wolverines have led West- ern Conference meets the last two seasons only to fold the second day. They finished in third place last spring and in fourth two years ago. Purdue, last year's winner, has a strong team and the advantage of playing on its home course. Doubles Matches Doubles matches will have Michigan in the favorite's spot at both the two and three positions. Fraser and Lowe meet MSU's Jim Phillips and Dhooge at number two while Flood and Jim Swift face Hoosiers Chill Fichter and Bob Wham at number three. On the basis of dual meet re- sults from earlier in the season,3 Michigan would win five of today's matches while Indiana would win three. This would give the Wol- verines the title by nine points.
