PAGE FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, MAY 18, 1965 SPLITS WITH SPARTANS: Al' Loses Big Ten Lead i For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 from 1:00 to 2:30 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 10:00 'til 11:30 A.M. Michigan lost its share of the Big Ten baseball lead Saturday knd, to add insult to injury, the University of Detroit beat the YVolverines in a nonconference game yesterday, 12-10. The loss to the Titans, whom Michigan defeated in Ann Arbor last week, 6-1, came on the heels of a doubleheader split with MSU. The Wolverines won the first game 6-1 and dropped the night- cap 5-4. A rain-out of Ohio State's doubleheader against Min- nesota left the Buckeyes with an 8-2 conference record. Michigan is 9-3 and MSU 8-4. The split with Michigan State gives the Wolverines a chance to win the title without anyone else's help, provided they can win their three road games this weekend. Coach Moby Benedict's men face league-leading Ohio State on Fri- day, and journey to Bloomington for a doubleheader with fifth- place Indiana Saturday. If Michigan wins all three games, the title will be theirs out- right. A loss to the Buckeyes would require that the Spartans then beat OSU a doubleheader Saturday while losing their sin- gle game with the Hoosiers Fri- day. A loss to Indiana would be fatal unless Ohio State lost two and MSU lost one of its last three games. More than one loss would make the first Wolverine baseball cham- pionship since 1961 a virtual im- possibility. Were Michigan and MSU to somehow tie at the top, Michigan State would get the crown because it has gone with- 3ut it the longest. The Spartans have won the title only once since joining the conference 14 years ago. That was in 1954. Saturday's games at East Lans- ing were highlighted by the pitching performances of Clyde Barnhart and Bill Wahl, and the hitting of Chan Simonds. But it was a belated rally that just fell short in the nightcap that pro- vided most of the day's excite- ment. Barnhart pitched a four hitter in the first game. Simonds belted a three-run homer and Dick Schyrer blasted a 400-foot drive over the centerfield fence to pro- vide him plenty of margin for victory. The Wolverines staked MSU to a five-run lead in the nightcap as the Spartans trounced all over starter Bill Zepp and reliever Bob Reed. A walk, an error, a bunt single and a pair of solid singles spelled Zepp's downfall, and two walks and a single kayoed Reed. Wahl came in to choke off the rally and pitched one-hit ball the rest of the way, though the one hit was a solo homer to Dick Bill- ings. Trailing 5-1 going into the sev- enth and final inning, the Wol- verines rallied. Simonds, Al Bara, Rick Sygar and pinch-hitter Les Netmen Beat Indiana, 5-4; Stand Good Chance for Title Indiana and Michigan are both ready to win the Big Ten tennis crown. After shutting out Illinois and Ohio State and trimming Indiana 5-4, the Wolverines are only one point behind the Hoosiers going into this week's conference meet. Indiana has copped the title the last two years, and has a 101-46 record through Coach Bill Lan- din's eight seasons as mentor. Equally Impressive But Michigan's record is equally impressive. The Wolverines have been runner-up the last two years and won the title four times in a row before that. Coach Bill Mur- phy's 16 years here have brought Michigan seven conference crowns, an NCAA championship and a 150-33 dual meet record. Linksters Drub MSU; Newton Leads with 70 Michigan beat Michigan State, 530 to 552, in their golf match yesterday. Low scorer for the match was the Wolverines' Bill Newton, with 70. The rest of the Michigan team came in as follows: Chuck West, 75; Jim Evashevski, 76; Pete Pas- sink, 77, and Frosty Evashevski, Bob Barkley and Marc Yahn, all 78. MSU's low scorers were Breck Morrison and Ken Benson at 77. Springtime is W HITE LEVI TIME get them at THE Levi Storej 1ier ldd's 1208 S. University The Big Ten title will be de- cided this year by combining points earned from dual meets during the season with individual performances in the meet this Thursday through Saturday at Bloomington. Indiana presently has 70 points, based on its 70-11 dual meet record, and Michigan is right behind with 69. Indiana lost only one dual meeet during the season, to Michigan in Columbus last Saturday, while the Wolverines were likewise beaten just once, 6-3 by Northwestern at Evanston. The Wildcats, in third place in the conference, also have a shot at the crown though they are now a dozen points behind the leaders. Tournament Play at the conference will be an elimination tournament with a possible total of 81-90 points at stake for the winner. Each team's six players and three doubles squads will be competing against the equally rated members of the other Big Ten teams. Winners will meet - winners at each level until there are conference cham- pions in the numbers one through six singles aNd one, two and three doubles. Every individual championship will bring a team nine or 10 points, depending on whether the player has to play in a one- point preliminary round. Top- seeded players-those who lost the fewest matches during the regular season-will draw byes for the preliminary round and be so ar- ranged that they will meet the other seeded players on their level only in the final or semifinal matches, if they make it that far. Tanona lashed consecutive singles and the score was suddenly 5-3. Two men were on with none out. Bob Gilhooley slashed the ball down the third-base line, but John Biedenbach, p r o t e e t i n g against the long hit into the cor- ner, scooped up the ball and be- gan a fast double play. A fourth run came home, but Ted Sizemore bounced out to end the game. Simonds, with four hits in sev- en at bats, had his best day in a Michigan uniform. M' Sets for B ig Ten Test With VictoryI The Wolverines' thinclads won a four-way meet this weekend in- preparation for a try at the Big Ten championship Saturday. George Canamare led the way by setting a new Big Ten record of 15'53/4" for the pole vault. The Wolverines came up with 71 points against Northwestern's 41, Indiana's 34 and Purdue's 27. The results of the meet make no difference to the championship,1 which will be decided by Satur- day's meet at Iowa. Dorie Reid won both the 100- yard dash and the 220 in Michi-; gan's sweep of seven of the 15 events. The best event was the half-mile run, in which Wolver- ines came in first, second and fourth. The intermediate hurdles was the only event in which the Michigan team received no points. 660-YARD DASH-1Harris (N); 2. Gerometta (M); 3. Dewey (P); 4. Legacki (M). Time-1:20.1. DISCUS-1.
