PALMER HAS 72: Aaron Charges to PGA Lead with Five-Under 66 For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 from 1:00 to 2:30 P.M. Monday through Friday, and 9:30 'til 11:30 A.M. Saturday LIGONIER, Pa. (1) - Tommy Aaron, a quiet, softly-drawling Georgian romped over the plush, hilly acres of the Laurel Valley Golf Club in a five-under-par 66 yesterday, just enough to hold off late charges by Mason Rudolph and Gardner Dickinson and stand for the first round lead in the PGA championships. Rudolph and Dickinson each made a major bid in the lengthen- ing, late evening shadows and WorldSWSim Mark Beaten TOLEDO (P)-Young Patti Ca- retto of Commerce, Calif., bettered her own world record in the 1500- meter freestyle yesterday at the National AAUJ Men's and Women's. Swimming and Diving Champion- ships, stroking the metric mile in 18:23.7. Runner-up Sharon Finneran of Santa Clara, Calif., also bettered the world mark of 18:30.5, set by Miss -Caretto in last year's AAU outdoor, turning the distance in 18:29.2. Major League tann(ings AMERICAN LEAGUE had a share of the lead with two holes to go. But Rudolph bogeyed the 17th and Dickinson the 18th to fall one stroke back at 67. One more stroke behind at 68 was the trio of youthful Ray Floyd, Australian Bruce Devlin and grizzled Sam Snead, . the storied Old Slammer who has bridged two generations of golf- ers. Fast Starter Aaron, a notorious fast starter who has yet to win on the PGA tour, had been in the clubhouse for hours musing over his excel- lent but somewhat scrambly round, when Rudolph and Dick- inson finished-Rudolph with a banker's caution and 'Dickinson with a charge. Host pro Arnold Palmer, mean- while, was stunned with a two- stroke penalty for a double bogey 6 on the opening hole and stag- gered home with a 72, one over for the 7,090-yard par 36-35-71 layout and well back in the field. Nicklaus at 69 Masters champion Jack Nick- laus, the Ohio strongboy who was the overwhelming pre-tourney fa- vorite to win his second PGA title, was alone in seventh place with a 69. A noted Pennsylvanian amateur, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower, who watched the early going, had long since departed when Rudolph and Dickinson came in near the tail of the cumbersome field of 167, a field delayed in starting some two hours by an early morning fog in the picturesque little valley. Following Nicklaus was a group of four at 70, including Dave Marr, Mike Souchak, Billy Casper and Chuck Courtney. Defending champion Bobby Nichols blew to a 74. Upsetter Upset In Tennis Meet SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (R) - Left-hander Mark Cox, an un- ranked Englishman making his first visit to America in six years, defeated Jerry Cromwell of Long. Beach, Calif., 7-5, 8-6, in the quar- ter-finals of the Meadow Club Grass Court Tennis Tournament yesterday. Cromwell is the Southern Cali- fornia senior who on Wednesday upset Australia's Roy Emerson in, the bigest shocker of the season. Cox, a 22-year-old Cambridge student, entered the semifinals with defender Gene Scott of St. James, N.Y., the country's fifth ranking player, who is seeded fourth. Scott beat 18-year-old Stan Smith of Pasadena, Calif., last year's National Junior champion, 6-3, 7-5 in the first of the two quarter - finals scheduled yester- day.
