Michigan split a doubleheader with Iowa Saturday, winning the first game 4-3 and dropping the second 2-1, while second place Ohio State and fourth place In- diana also split their weekend bills. Third place Michigan State be- came a title contender with a three-game sweep Friday and Sat- urday, setting the stage for a key home-and-home series between the Spartans and Wolverines this weekend. State will be going for its second conference crown since it entered the league in 1951, while Michigan will be trying for its first title since 1961. Tough Schedule The following weekend, Michi- gan will battle Ohio State at Co- lumbus on Friday and close. the season with a doubleheader against' Indiana at Bloomington Saturday. Meanwhile, the Spartans will be facing the Hoosiers and Buck- eyes. Luck has been a lady for the Wolverines all season, and she stayed true to form for 14 in- nings yesterday. Combining time- ly hitting with good breaks, Michi- gan pulled out the first game with a two-run rally in the eighth. Trailing 3-2 with two outs, Carl Cmejrek singled and Al Bara dou- bled. A pair of singles by Chan Simonds and Dan DiNunzio brought both of them home be- fore Jim McAdrew replaced Hawk- eye starter Bob Gebhart and re- tired Rick Sygar to end the rally. Clyde Barnhart got credit for, his third Big Ten victory withoutI a loss, although Bob Reed came on in the ninth to preserve the win for Michigan. Barnhart pitched five strong in- nings after a shaky start. He gave up a run in the first on a walk and a double by Jerry Moses and two tallies in the third on a walk, i single and another double by Moses. He then tossed no-hit ball until the ninth. Reed was brought in after Barn- aart was touched for a lead-off single, and, with one out, he gave up another base hit. But with only a sacrifice necessary to bring in the tying run, the Michigan in- field converted Larry McDowell's ground ball into a game-ending double play. The second game began much the same way. Michigan squeezed out a run in the first on a walk to Ted Sizemore, a single by Dick Schyrer and a delayed double steal, with Sizemore racing home after Schyrer had drawn a throw as he raced safely to second. Those were the Wolverines only two hits off Hawkeye starter Bob Schauenberg in the first five in- nings. For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 from 1:00 to 2:30 P.M.
