Monday through Friday, and 9:30 'til 11:30 A.M. Saturday 0 By TOM BAKER Michigan's Big Ten champion basketball team faces a major re- building job this season with the loss of three key starters, but a trio of other factors could unlock the door to a second straight ti- tle. Leaving the quintet that lost to UCLA in the finals of the NCAA tournament are All-America cen- ter Bill Buntin, Captain Larry Tregoning and defensive star George Pomey. Along with return- ing regulars Cazzie Russell and Oliver Darden, Coach Dave Strack had 3a squad that averaged 6'6" and 215 pounds, one of the big- gest and strongest collegiate crews ever assembled. S PORTS HORTS By The Associated Press NEW YORK-Casey Stengel will undergo surgery today on his broken left hip-an injury that will keep the celebrated baseball character away from his New York Mets for several weeks and could mean the end of his career. While Stengel, who will be 75 this Friday, is incapacitated the National League's tail-end team will be managed by Wes Westrum, one of three Met coaches. He was Stengel's nominee Monday for the interim job. Stengel suffered a displaced fracture of his hip early Sunday- but how remains a question. The prevailing version is that he slip- ped getting out of a car not long after attending a party that last- ed until the early morning hours. MILWAUKEE-The Milwaukee Braves filed suit in U.S. District Court yesterday asking for a judgment declaring the club is le- gally free to play baseball in At- lanta next year. The Braves contended that var- ious moves by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, au- thorizing the bringing of anti- trust and other actions in con- nection with the transfer, "are not made with any valid expec- tations of securing favorable judg- ments." *I * * SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Top seeded Roy Emerson and Fred Stolle of Australia, seemingly un- perturbed by their surprising loss- es to Charles Pasarell of Puerto Rico in last week's Pennsylvania championships, swept through first round opponents with ease yesterday in the Eastern Grass Court Tennis Championships. . Despite these losses, Coach Strack has three big reasons toi look forward to the coming cam- paign. The first is the return of Rus- sell and Darden. Strack couldt scarcely find a better pair to build around. Cazzie, an All-American the last two years, broke his own Michigan scoring record of 670; points in a season by scoring 692 from his guard spot last year. Captain-elect Darden, at 6'7" and 230 pounds, is an outstanding re- bounder and also possesses an ac- curate jump shot. The second reason is the excep- tional strength of last year's re- serves. Expected to fill Buntin's spot is 6'10" junior Craig Dill. Jim Myers, a 6'7" senior, is a probable starter at forward, but will be challenged by 6'5" John Clawson and 6'5" Dan Brown. John Thomp- son, a 6' senior who started for part of last season at guard, has a good chance at Pomey's vacated position ,although he will have to beat out Dennis Bankey and sev- eral others. The third reason is the help ex- pectd from last year's frosh. Strack thinks 6'2" Jim Pitts, a guard from Detroit, "could help us a lot," and he will be given a thorough trial. Another top fresh- man is 6'5" Mark Fritz, a for- ward from Birmingham. "We should have a balanced, hustling squaid, not quite as big as last year, but perhaps a bit quick- er," says Strack. The team will have to live up to every one of Strack's expecta- tions if it is to repeat as confer- ence champs. Minnesota, which finished second last season, re- turns practically intact. By virtue of this fact alone, the Gophers must be considered favorites. Ohio State and Purdue should be great- ly improved, Strack says, and MSU will almost certainly escape the cellar on the strength of last year's freshmen. Iowa and North- western, with young teams last season and a year of experience under their belts, will also have to be reckoned with. Looking further ahead into Michigan's basketball fortunes, Strack notes that this year's re- cruiting drive netted eight out- standing prospects. Six-foot four- inch Bob Sullivan from Manito- wac, Wis., Dennis Stewart, a 6'6", 215 pounder from Steeltown, Pa., and David McClellan of Toledo were high school All-America's, as well as capturing all-state hon- ors. Ken Maxey, a 5'9" all-state guard from Cazzie Russell's alma mater, Carver High School in Chi- cago, will also be in Ann Arbor this fall. Other top prospects are 6"?" Bill Montrose from Wyoming, O., Mike Mandrell and Clarence Ad- ams, both of Cincinnati, and De- troit's Willie Edwards. FOR RENT WANTED-2, 3, or 4 male roommates to rent fall apartment. Don Mincher smacked a three- run homer for the Twins in the first inning and the Orioles never caught up. The victory widened Minnesota's lead over Baltimore to 41/2 games. In the only other AL game scheduled, the Los Angeles Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 6-2 with four runs in the eighth. Lu Clin- ton tripled to start the uprising and scored what proved to be the winning run on Bob Rodger's single. Two-run homers by Willie Davis and Wes Parker, plus Maury Wills' 68th and 69th stolen bases, carried Los Angeles to a 5-4 victory over Cincinnati and moved the Dodgers two games ahead of the Reds. Joe Torre drove in four runs with three hits, including his 19th homer, to pace Milwaukee to a 6-0 shutout of Houston on Wade Blasingame's five -hit pitching. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Braves. I-M Scores FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFF Prescott 8, Chem Met 3 Physics forfeited to N. C.
