Monday through Friday, and Saturday 10:00 'til 11:30 A.M. By The Associated Press Bob Friend allowed only one hit -an infield single by Chicago's on Landrum in the fourth- hile pitching his 34th major ague shutout for Pittsburgh 6-0 ith the help of two homers by im Pagliaroni and one by Donn lendenon. Two-run home runs by Don emeter and Bill Freehan power- d the Detroit Tigers to a come- rom-behind 6-5 victory over the 'hicago White Sox last night. Orlando Pena, who relieved starter Hank Aguirre in the third inning, gave up only four hits and recorded his second triumph since comning to the Tigers from Kansas City. In Baltimore, Brooks Robinson singled with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, driving in the winning run as the Baltimore Orioles defeated Minnesota 3-2 lisat night and cut the Twins' American League lead to 3 '2 games. The second-place Orioles, han- ding Jim Perry his first defeat after seven victories, had gotten -phasis by TOM WEINBERG Sports Editorj Look What Heyns Would Be Leavn A few jottings of an itinerant sports writer: . Even though I think Vice-President for Academic Affairs Roger3 W. Heyns has pretty well decid1ed to go to Berkeley, he really should consider that he's trading the best run and most successful collegiate athletic program in the country for the West Coast, where the stu- dent athletes are commonly divided into two categories-semipro and professional. But I guess that doesn't have much to do with academic affairs. * * * * LOOK FOR THE announcement of final bids on construction of the new University Events Building next week and a forthcoming an- nouncement of the practicability of building the sorely-needed arena. WAVE GOOD-BY next week to Coach Dave Strack and the Big Ten champion basketball team as they're headed toward Europe and a few carefully-selected trouble spots around the continent. Strack will have 11 players along with him on the State Department spon- sored tour that culminates with an appearance in an international tournament in Greece ,at the same time most of us will be sweating through registration in the last week of August. All of last year's starters, Bill Buntin, Cazzie Russell, captain- elect Oliver Darden, Larry Tregoning and George Pomey will be on the tour. The other six are Jim Myers, Craig Dill, John Clawson, Dennis Bankey, Dan Brown and John Thompson,. JUST THIS WEEK, the final 1965-66 schedule for the cagers was released. Wow!! That's about all I can say. They'll open with three games at home-Tennessee, Bowling Green and Ball State. Then the fireworks begins as they travel to Wichita to reciprocate for last year's Cobo Hall thriller, then during and before exams, they'll go on display irj one of the now-famous Chicago Stadium double- headers against a rough outfit from the University of San Francisco. No doubt the Stadium will be packed to see the return of Cazzie-his first appearance in the Windy City propel since graduating from Carver lIigh. Over vacation, Strack will put the team on display once more in Co'bo Arena on Dec. 21 in a game that promises to be another action- packed contest against Duke. The next night, the Wolverines will have somewhat of a breather, meeting Butler on the Indianapolis floor. Over the New Year's holiday, the Michigan crew will return to a floor they'd just as soon forget-the auditorium at Portland, Ore., for the Far West Classic. Then it's the Big Ten season. And it's a pretty rough one. The bi-annual rogation in the schedule has occurred and the Wolverines will face Minnesota only once for the next two seasons. This year, it's a big one against the favored Gophers at home on Jan. 22. Wis- consin, Iowa, Indiana, Northwestern and Purdue will have two shots at the champs, while Ohio State, Michigan State and Illinois will each play the Wolverines only once. * * * * SINCERE CONDOLENCES go out from this corner to WallyI Weber, a Michigan football legend in his own time, on the unfortunate passing of his wife this week. only three hits when they struck in the ninth. Jose Cardenal collected four hits, including his ninth homer, and Jim Fregosi contributed a home run in powering the Los Angeles Angels to a 7-3 victory over the hapless Boston Red Sox. Yankees Lose The Cleveland Indians defeated the New York Yankees 5-2 as catcher Duke Sims drove in three runs with a homer and a single and pitcher Luis Tiant hit his second major league home run. In Washington, Ken Hamlin's two-run double with two out in the seventh inning helped the Senators to a 5-3 victory over Kansas City. Three-Hitter Joey Jay allowed three hits, only one after the first inning, and Frank Robinson stroked four singles as Cincinnati whipped Houston 9-1 last night. Pinch hitter John Stephenson singled to right field in the 10th inning, driving in the run that gave the New York Mets a 3-2 triumph over Philadelphia. S PORTS HORTS By The Associated Press DETROIT-Detroit Lions star punter Yale Lary, an 11-year vet- eran of the National Football League, announced his retirement yesterday. Coach Harry Gilmer said that Joe Don Looney, Earl Morrall, Pat Studstill and Larry Harbin all will be given a shot at taking over the punting chores. Lary announced his decision to retire at a press conference in Fort Worth, Texas. He said it wasn't easy to retire but "I had a good year last season and I prefer to leave with a good record." $ * * WASHINGTON - U.S. Open champion Gary Player was turn- ing the 72-hole $50,000 National Challenge Match into a runaway with a five-under-par 30 on thel front nine of the 6,834-yard Lake- wood Country Club course yester-I day.
