Laver, who is 26, broke Rose- wall's service in the first game of the opening set in the rain-de- layed windup. He took a 3-0 lead before Rosewall got his brilliant backhand working. Rosewall per- formed nearly flawlessly the rest of the way and had a big edge in volleying. The victory. was Rosewall's third in the last four tournaments on the U.S. tour and avenged his defeat by Laver at Newport, R.I., last week. In nine tournaments, Laver won four with earnings of $17,744. Rosewall captured three and had earnings of $18,302, and Pancho Gonzales took two and topped the money winners with $18,945, Laver picked up a check for $2000 after his loss to Rosewall. Gonzales earned $1500 as he took third place in the $15,000 tourna- ment by defeating Earl Buch- holz of St. Louis 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Buchholz earned $1000. SAN FRANCISCO (P)-Warren Spahn, the 44-year-old, former pitching star who was cut loose by the last place New York Mets, will join the pennant-contending San Francisco Giants tomorrow. The Giants announced yester- day they had reached an agree- ment with therveteran who has won more games than any other left-hander in baseball history. The high-salaried hurler was re- leased last Wednesday by the youth-minded Mets. Although Spahnie had lost eight straight for the last place Mets, both he and the Giants feel he'll help the third-place club in its drive for the National League pennant. Terms of the contract weren't announced, but it was believed the veteran won't suffer much of a cut from the $73,500 he signed for with the Mets. Manager Herman Franks said he feels the left-hander can help and he has been searching for a port- side thrower. The Giants have only two, Bill Henry and Masan- ori Murakami, neither of them starters. PAUL (P)- Sam Mele, manager of Ameri- can League leading Minnesota, said yesterday he considers a five-day suspension imposed by league President Joe Cronin un- fair, and plans to discuss the matter with Cronin. Coach Hal Naragon will be in charge of the Twins during Mele's absence. Mele, slapped with a $500 fine in addition to the suspension for his run-in with umpire Bill Val- entine in Sunday's Twins-Los An- geles doubleheader here, said: "I expected the fine, but not the suspension-at least not for that long. I think the length of the suspension is unfair. "Sure, I was surprised. I didn't think I deserved that much in view of two facts: the way my ball player was treated and be-, cause we're in a pennant race. "The umpires have to have re- spect, but they've got to respect my ball players, too." Mele drew the fine and suspen- sion after a jostling fracas with Valentine in the sixth inning of Sunday's first game, won 5-3 by the Angels. He appeared to take a swing at Valentine during the al- tercation, which wound up with other umpires and players pulling the pair apart. Ralston Found Able To Play DALLAS (P) - Dennis Ralston, top man on the United States Da- vis Cup team that meets Mexico in the American Zone finals here next week, had a checkup yester- day and found that he is virtually certain to play in the matches despite a pulled leg muscle. Ralston flew into town yester- day and was examined by a doc- tor, who told him heat treat- ments should get him in shape to begin workouts tomorrow. Ralston, thesnation's No. 1 play- er from Bakersfield, Calif., suffer- ed the injury last week in a tour- nament at Milwaukee. He rein- jured the leg in beating Cliff Richey of Dallis in the finals of the National Clay Courts tourna- ment at River Forest Club in; Chicago Sunday. HELP WANTED ALASKA-Dam job. Big project.
