FOUR THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY.JULY. 16,-1966 ... +..vrm.rasu..} uvuA" yVt Aovo NCAA=AAU Feud To Be Investigated WASHINGTON ()-A congres- sional committee is stepping into the jurisdictional dispute between the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Amateur Ath- letic Union. Sen. Warren G. Magnuson (D- Wash) said yesterday the Senate Commerce Committee he heads will hold a hearing at a date to be determined later. "This dispute has gone on long enough," Magnuson told the Sen- ate. "It is now the duty of the Senate to speak out for those who have no voice." Scholarships Magnuson referred to college athletes, who, he said, faced loss of athletic scholarships for daring to compete in AAU-sponsorei events to select track and field teams for international competi- tion. "We will call the representa- tives of all athletic organizations concerned in this dispute and seek their testimony in public hear- ings," he said. "We will call on those educators whose schools have been subjected to outside pressures as a result of this dis- pute. We will call on the athletes themselves. "We will work until we get to the heart of this matter, and we will take whatever action is nec- essary to prevent a strangling of athletic freedom in our nation." Lindgren Magnuson referred specifically to Gerry Lindgren, distance run- ner from Washington State, who disregarded an NCAA ban an. competed in the National AAU championships in San Diego in June for a spot on the United States team to meet Russian ath- letes at Kiev. Grads MAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP: League-Leading Twins Split with Tail-End A's, By TheAssociated Press MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL-Tom Reynolds' two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning lifted Kansas City to a 3-2 victory over Min- nesota and a split of their double- header last night. The American League-leading Twins won the opener 11-3 as Tony Oliva slammed a pair of bases-empty home runs. Oliva also drove in both Minnesota runs in the nightcap. Starter Jim Perry held the Ath- letics to four hits in 7% innings of the nightcap but had to leave the game with a pulled muscle. Worthington Al Worthington took over, and walked leadoff batter Ken Harrel- son in the ninth. Johnny Blanch- ard followed with a single, and the runners advanced to second and third on a sacrifice. Worthington struck out Nelson Mathews, but Reynolds lined a double off Sandy Valdespino's glove in left field for two runs.. Harrelson, who homered in the first game, also connected in the second inning of the second game. Oliva doubled home Zoilo Ver- salles in the third and singled him across with the lead run in the fifth. Wrap It Up The Twins drapped up the opener with a seven-run outburst in the fourth inning, aided by six walks. Five consecutive passes forced in four runs, and Valde- spino's two-run' single climaxed the deluge. Oliva increased his season homeI run procluction to 14 with blasts in the first and fifth innings. The Athletics tagged winner Jim Kaat for home runs by Harrel- son, Dick Green and Rene Lache- mann. Reliever John Klippstein shut out the A's the last three in- nings. * * * DETROIT-Jerry Lumpe dou- bled and scored on Al Kaline's sin- gle in the 10th inning, boosting the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 tri- umph over Baltimore last night. After Lumpe led off the 10th with his double to left center field, Stu Miller walked Norm Cash in- tentionally. Kaline then singled to center for the winning run. The loss gave Miller a 6-4 rec- ord. The Orioles chased Detroit start- er Mickey Lolich in the eighth when Brooks Robinson tied the game with a two-run homer. Baltimore continued to threaten against reliever Terry Fox as Sam Bowens and Boog Powell singled. But Fox got Jerry Adair to hit into a double play and Dick Brown grounded out. ma jor Leagrue Standings E AMERICAN LEAGUE S PORTS HORTS By The Associated Press TORONTO-Bruce Devlin of Australia took over the lead in the $100,000 Canadian Open Golf Championship yesterday with a second round four-under-par 66. This gave the 27-year-old Aus- sie, who plays out of Hilton Head Island, S.C., a one stroke lead over Jack Nicklaus, the Masters champ from Columbus, Ohio at the half- way mark of the 72-hole tourney with a 36-hole total of 134. Nicklaus also shot a second round 66, but he had a first round 69 to Devlin's 68. Joe Campbell of Perdido Bay, Fla., the first round leader with a 66, shot a par 70 over the 6,828- yard Missmissaugua Club course and was third at 136. . , ; CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING RATES LINES 1 DAY 3 DAYS 6 DAYS 2 .70 1.95 3 45 3 .85 2.40 4 20 4 1.00 2.85 4.95 Figure 5 average words to a line.
