Monday through Friday, and Saturday 10:00 'til 11:30 A.M. I4 SOUTHPORT, England QP) - Peter Thomson of Australia emerged from the shadows of near obscurity yesterday with a 285 total for his fifth British Open Golf Championship that placed him within one rung of the immortal Harry Vardon. The 36-year-old professional from Melbourne battled through rain and blustery winds for sub- par rounds of 72 and 71, com- pletely smothering one of the strongest American challenges ever mustered. Of the tour-toughened Yanks, only defending champion Tony Lema of San Leandro, Calif., made a fight of it, moving within one shot with two holes to play. But he faded with a fat six on the Wisconsin Prep Star Picks 'M' Bob Sullivan, a high school All- America basketball player from Manitowoc, Wis., has accepted a Michigan athletic tender and will enroll here this fall, according to Coach Dave Strack. The 6'4", 185-pounder was se- lected on the Wisconsin All-State team during both his junior and senior seasons. He also was chosen most valuable player on the all- state team and was named on sev- eral All-America scholastic squads. Playing for Manitowoc High, Sulli- van averaged 24 points per game and also paced his team in re- bounding with 363 in 23 games last season. Sullivan selected Michigan after visiting its campus as well as those of UCLA, Michigan State, Wis- consin, Marquette, Northwestern, Southern California, Stanford and Tulane, all seeking to enroll him.. final hole and had a tie for fifth place. With rounds of finished with 289. to settle for 75-74, Lema Runners Up A tough little Welshman, Brian Huggett, and Ireland's Christy O'- Connor were closest to Thomson with 287 and Rcberto de Vicenzo, the long-hitting Argentine, was fourth with 288. "I am lazy-no punch at the fin- ish," de Vicenzo complained. America's one-two golf punch of Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Pal- mer blew sky high and finished down among the also-rans. The other member of the Big Three, South Africa's Gary Player, quit after firing a 79 in the morning round. "My neck hurt too much," Play- er, the U.S. Open champion, said. "I saw no reason to continue." Bad To Worse Nicklaus, Masters champion and strong 3-1 pre-tournament favor- ite, started the final day with a bogey six and went from bad to worse. He shot rounds of 77 and 73 for 294 that won him a tie for 12th place and $371 in winnings. Palmer was worse. Fretting over his putting and failing to ignite one of his famous stretch runs, the Latrobe, Pa., strong boy strug- gled in with rounds of 75 and 79 for 295. The world's richest golfer pocketed exactly $322. Henderson Signs DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Lions signed former University of 1'Mlichigan end John Hender- son to a 1965 contract yester- day. Henderson, 22, of Dayton, Ohio, was a key member of the 1964 Big Ten and Rose Bowl champion team. "I am sick," Palmer said. "My putting was atrocious." The only other American rep- resentative to survive to the last day, Terry Dill of Muleshoe, Tex., was happy with his two 79's that placed him at 305. It was a good showing in a tough league. Avoids Tour Thomson is a mild, quiet Aus- tralian who has a deep-seated an- tipathy for the American tour. He has gone to great extremes in re- cent years to avoid it, playing largely in England and in the Far East. Major League I Standings I* PERSONAL DAVID-I had to cut it after all, but Corey's is MUCH shorter (and that should make all the difference in the world!)
