Saturday NEW YORK () - Felix Man- tilla, a New York Met reject, was named yesterday on the 1965 American League All-Star team which for the first time in its 33-year history failed to list a sin- gle member of the New York Yankees. Mantilla, the American League's runs-batted-in leader, beat out Bobby Richardson of the Yankees for the second base job on the opening line-up which will face the National League's best'on July 13 at Minnesota. The veteran Boston Red Sox infielder, who also has played the outfield, is the league's fifth lead- ing batter with .317. Third baseman Brooks Robin- son of the Baltimore Orioles was the only repeater from the 1964 opening line-up. Robinson was joined by four players who made the team for the first time. They included shortstop Dick McAu- iffe and left fielder Willie Horton of the Detroit Tigers, center field- er Vic Davalillo of the Cleveland Indians, and Mantilla. Other starters, chosen by a vote of 280 league players, coaches and managers, were catcher Earl Battey of Minnesota, first base- man Bill Skowron of the Chicago White Sox and right fielder Rocky Colavito of the Indians. In all, the American League starting team, exclusive of the pitcher, comprised two players each from Cleveland and Detroit, and one apiece from Baltimore, Boston, Chicago and Minnesota. The Yankees who, back in 1939 and 1940 had five starters in the opening line-up, managed to land two runner-up positions.' Catcher Elston Howard, side- lined for five weeks following an elbow operation; finished second to Battey. Richardson was runner up to Mantilla. Other runners-up included Min- nesota's Harmon Killebrew at first SPORTS SHORTS By The Associated Press NEW YORK-Wilt Chamber- lain is quitting professional bas- ' etball to become a heavyweight fighter, according to sportscaster Frank Gifford. Gifford said on his Tuesday CBS radio show that Chamber- lain would announce his retire- ment from the Philadelphia 76ers within the next two' weeks, then go under the tutelage of boxing veteran Cus D'Amato, who train- ed former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson and current light heavyweight champion Jose Tor- res. * * * LOS ANGELES-Randy Matson, holder of the world shot-put rec- ord, hs been selected for the U.S. track and field team that will meet Russia July 31-Aug. 1 in Kiev, despite his failure to com- pete in last weekend's AAU cham- pionships, the Los Angeles Times said yesterday. base, Zoilo Versalles at shortstop and Jimmie Hall inacenter; Cleve- land's Max Alvis at third base; Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in left field and Detroit's Al Kaline in right field. Senate Gets Antitrust Bill For Sports WASHINGTON (A)-A bill to exempt the sports aspects of pro- fessional baseball, football, basket- ball and hockey from the antitrust laws came successfully through its first round in Congress yester- day but its eventual prospects re- mained uncertain. The Senate Antitrust and Mo- nopoly Subcommittee unanimous- ly approved the bill, which strips from baseball its present exemp- tion on business activities but extends to the other three sports baseball's protection on its sports dealings. A similar bill died last year in the Senate. The subcommittee, in passing the team sports measure on to the full Judiciary Committee, also sent along--but without approval or disapproval-a bill to police professional boxing by setting up the office of national boxing com- missioner with broad powers. Sen. Philip A. Hart (D-Mich), subcommittee chairman and chief sponsor of both bills, told a re- porter he thought the team sports exemption bill had a better chance this year Among the factors he cited was the acquisition last year of the New York Yankees baseball team by the Columbia Broadcast- ing System. The Supreme Court has declared that baseball is exempt from anti- trust laws but has refused to ex- tend this protection to other sports. Witnesses told the sub- committee that the present exemp- tion on baseball's business dealings forestalled possible, antitrust ac- tion against CBS's purchase of the Yankees. PATRICK J. Ralph Terry, a key man in Cleveland's success this year, brought his pitching record to 8-3 and chipped in with a two-run double. Rally Fails The White Sox rallied for a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth inning against the Twins on Smoky Bur- gess' pinch two-run homer - the f163rd pinch hit and 14th pinch homer of his career. But Zoilo Versalles' sacrifice fly scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Sandy Koufax became the ma- jors' first 13-game winner, with solid batting support from John Roseboro and Jim Gilliam, as the National League-leading Los An- geles Dodgers whipped San Fran- cisco 9-3.
