FRIDAY, JUNE 18, 1965 W agle Leads Open as 'avortles Skyrocket , i TAKE defending champion who Washington's sweltering year ago and later turned a tragic hand ailment. won in heat a up with His right hand almost usele s, Venturi, a late starter, soared nne over par through the 15th. His cause was lost. All three will have to struggle to survive the traditional halfway cut when the field will be reduced today from 150 to the low 50 and ties. Two other prime favorites stayed alive. Sam Snead, making his 25th bid at the age of 53, shot a 75. British Open Champion Tony Lema had a 72, Rifle-like iron play gave Nagle a cluster of birdies on the incom- ing nine for a 35-33-68 and a one- stroke edge over amateur- Deane Beman of Bethesda, Md., and Mason Rudolph, the bespectacled tour regular from Clarksville, Tenn., the only other player under par at 69. The strong start of Nagle and Beman sent historians thumbing through the record books. Oldest Winner The Australian, at 44 years and six months, could become the old- est man ever to win the Open and the first foreigner to do so since big, mustachioed Ted Ray did it in 1920. Ray was 43 years, four months at the time. The last amateur to take the title was Johnny Goodman, who won at Glenview, Ill., in 1933. Gary Player of South Africa, who has captured every major title except this one, became a stern foreign threat when he post- ed an almost flawless 70 and tied at that spot with stringbean Al Geiberger of Santee, Calif.; Rex Baxter of Amarillo, Tex., and little - known Lou Graham of Nashville, Tenn. YOUR C 6's and staggered with an unbe- lievably .bad 78. Palmer, the harassed one-time king of the pros, did little better. Scrambling over the course and showing none of his old charging spirit; he limped-home with a 76. DINNER By The Associated Press Jim Kaat pitched a four-hitter for Minnesota yesterday and the Twins turned back the bid of the Chicago White Sox to take over first place in the American League. Kaat's pitching plus homers by Don Miricher and Zoilo 'Versalles brought the Twins a 3-1 triumph in the rubber game of a three- ganAe series with the White Sux. The defeat shoved the runner- up Sox 11/2 games behind the leading Twins. Danny Cater's homer in the eight accounted for Chicago's only run. Tigers Win The Detroit Tigers won their fifth straight with a come-from- behind 6-5 conquest of Boston on Norm Cash's eighth inning homer. It was the seventh straight de- feat for the Red Sox. It marked the 19th time in 32 victories that the Tigers have rallied to gain the verdict. The home run was Cash's third of the season and first since April 27. Baltimore won its seventh straight and swept a three-game series from the New York Yankees by taking a 16-inning night game 2-1. Bob Johnson's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out scored Russ Snyder with the winning run. Three-Hitter Cleveland shut out Washington 5-0 as Sonny Siebert pitched a three-hitter and struck out 15. It was Cleveland's fifth straight vic- tory. The Los Angeles Angels and Kansas City were not scheduled. The Pittsburgh Pirates beat St. Louis again in the National League 4-1, helped by Willie Stargell's two-run homer off Bob Gibson ih DEPENDABLE IMPORT SERVICE We have the MECHANICS and the PARTS.
