THE MICHIGAN DAILY THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 1965 5 WSU BREAKS GROUND FOR NEW SPORTS BUILDING THURSDAY, JIThJE 17, 1965 0 e-, SFIflr This is an artist's conception of Wayne State's new physical education and recreation build- ing. Ground-breaking for the $2.2 million structure took place Tuesday, with University Regent Frederick C. Matthaei, in whose honor the building will be nam- ed, on hand for the ceremony. The building is expected to be open for occupancy by the win- ter quarter, 1966. It will con- tain three gymnasiums-the biggest holding 3000 people-- and two swimming pools. It was named after Matthaei, a life- long sports enthusiast, as a tribute to his efforts to bring the Olympic Games to Detroit. (P) - Six track and field stars who eaptured titles in 1964 seek to defend their crowns this weekend in a Na- tional Collegiate Athletic Asso- ciation meet which shapes up as tough individually and collectively. Bank seeking new laurels are hammer thrower Alex Schulten of Bowdoin, pole vaulter John Uelses of LaSalle, Ore., , Oregon State miler Morgan Groth, St. John's half miler Tom Farrell and discus champion Larry Kennedy of New Mexico. California's mile relay team won last year and ranks among the favorites this time as the Bears bid farewell to Brutus Hamilton, their track coach for 33 years who has reached the mandatory re- tirement age.. Out with Injury Oregon captured the team championship a year ago but with distance ace Ken Moore out with a foot injury, the Ducks aren't figured in the top' category this time as the collegians compete at California's Edwards Stadium. The team race could be the closest in years and withthe win- ner getting only about 40 points, Maryland, Villanova, Kansas, Ore- gon State, New Mexico, Brigham Young, Stanford, California, and Southern California are all men- tioned; as possible title winners. No one of the 1964 champions rules as a clear cut favorite. Schulten was defeated last weekend in the College Division NCAA meet by Wayne Pangburn of Bates. Competition Uelses faces five other 16-foot vaulters and Kennedy will meet four men who have thrown the discus farther than he has this year. Groth is a two-time NCAA champion with an all-time best of 3:57.9 in the mile. However, the To Face senior's rivals include the new collegiate record holder, Bob Day of UCLA at 3:56.4 and also Mis- souri's Big Eight champion, Rob- in Lingle, 4:00.3. Farrell goes against Oklahoma State's Dave Perry. Oregon's soph- omore Wayne Bell and perhaps Groth if Coach Sam Bell decides to have his ace seek a double. Relay California's relay team has run a 3:08.7 this year but Abilene Christian has 3:08.5, Iowa and Drake each 3:08.7. The mile is the only champion, ship to be decided on the open- ing day. The broad jump, 100, 120 high hurdles and steeplechase finals will be on Friday with all other finals in the 20-event /pro- gram slated Saturday. Golf COLUMBUS, Ohio 0P) - Take it from the chairman in charge, this year's NCAA Golf Championships scheduled June 21-25 at Holston Hills Country Club, Knoxville, Tenn., will boast the most select teams in the history of the tour- nament. Bob Kepler of Ohio State Uni- versity, the 1965 chairman, said this will come about because screening committees from each of the NCAA districts selected Ihe teams for the first time this year. title six of the last eight years, among the top favored. Others- given a good chance to take the team title include Okla- homa State, which won in 1963 and has a strong team this year; Purdue, the Big Ten champion, and San Jose State - a strong team with defending individual champion Terry Small as the No. 1 man. Other contenders entered are those of Georgia, Florida, Flori- da State and Southern California. Attention Getting the most attention as a possible individual champion is Randy Petri of Houston. Petri won Tough NCAA'Is the Tucker, Les Bolstad, Fl Dora- do and Border Olympis intercol- legiate championships this year and was a semifinalist in last year's Trans-Mississippi. Some of the other top notchers besides Petri and Small expected to be in the competition for the individual title are Vinny Giles of Georgia, Jay Sigel of Louisiana State, Bert Green of Tennessee, Denny Lyons of, Florida State, Bill Newton of Michigan. And David Bumlia of Minneso- ta, Bob Dickson of Oklahoma State, George Boutell of Arizona State and Jim Wiechers of Santa Clara. Large studio, unfurn. $70/mo., includes all utilities. 663-7268.
