THE MICHINIEr~TfA IIV TUESDAY, JUNE 15, 1965 ialoney Pitches No-Hitter For 10 Innings, Loses 1-0 CINCINNATI WP) - Cincinnati's Jim Maloney pitched a no-hitter for 10 innings but gave up a lead- off home run to Johnny Lewis in the 11th inning and wound up with a two-hitter as the New York Mets edged the Reds 1-0 last' night. Maloney, whose feat goes into the record books as a 10-inning no-hitter, struck out 18. He al- lowed only two baserunners going into the 11th. The 18 strikeouts tied the Na- tional League record for strikeouts in an extra-inning game. Warren Spahn, now with the Mets, reach- ed that figure against Chicago in 15 innings in 1952. 2-1 Count + The fastballing Maloney, who pitched the third one-hitter of his six-year career in his first start this season, worked the count to Major League Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE 2-1 on Lewis, whom he already had fanned three times. Lewis, however, swung at the next pitch and drove the ball against the upper part of the cen- ter field wall for a home run. Maloney then struck out Ron Swoboda for his 18th, but Roy McMillan followed with a single to center field. Maloney ended the inning by getting Jesse Gonder to hit into a double play. Bearnarth Wins New York's Larry Bearnarth, who relieved starter Frank Lary in the ninth, got Pete Rose on a fly ball, leading off the Reds' 11th and struck out Vada Pin- son. Frank Robinson then sin- gled to center field for Cincin- nati's seventh hit, but Gordie Coleman grounded out, ending the game and ending the Mets' 10- game losing streak. The game was reminiscent of one in which the Reds defeated Houston 1-0 in nine innings last season. Houston's Ken Johnson pitched a no-hitter in that one, but lost in the ninth on an er- ror. The Reds had at least two good chances of scoring a run in regu- lation play. In the fourth inning Pinson singled and, with two out, reached second on an attempted steal when shortstop Roy McMil- lan dropped the throw from catch- er Chris Cannizzaro. Out at Plate Coleman then struck out, but a third strike got away from.Can- nizzaro, and Pinson tried to score all the way from second. Pin- son, however, was cut down at the plate on Cannizzaro's throw to Lary. In the eighth, Lary hit Tom Harper with a pitch with two out, and Harper stole second and went to third on Cannizzaro's low throw. Lary, however, ended the threat by getting Pete Rose on a grounder.
