Spray Sinks
Earl Lead
GRAND BLANC, Mich. (R) --
Steve Spray, who received his
college degree Thursday night,
gave himself a graduation pres-
ent earlier in the day by taking
the first round lead in the $100,-
000 Buick Open Golf Tournament.
The 24-year-old Spray parlay-
ed his long irons and a hot put-
ter for a four-under-par 68 over
the 7,280-yard Warwick Hills
Country Club course, longest of
the PGA tour.
The former Western Junior
champ took only 26 putts and had
10 one-putt greens in his sizzling
round Thursday.
Former Buick Open champion
Julius Boros held the runner-up
spot with a 69.
Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Pott,
Bert Weaver, Gene Littler, Doug
Sanders and Wright Garrett were
in a six-way tie for third with
70's.
Defending champion Tony Lema
had a 71. Arnold Palmer and Gary
Player settled for 73's. U.S. Open
champion Ken Venturi, tuning up
for defense of his title, shot a 76.
Looney Goes to
Lions in Trade
DETROIT--The Detroit Lions
yesterday swapped linebacker
Dennis Gaubatz for halfback Joe
Don Looney, along with a draft
choice, from the Baltimore Colts. .
What Looney can do for the
Lions is not known. "He has all
the ability you can expect to find
in one guy," Lion head Coach Har-
ry Gilmer said. But Looney has a
history of mercurial crankiness.
Refusing to practice for the Gi-
ants, who chose himi as their No.
1 draft choice. he had been trad-

Macken of Vancouver, B.C., reiter-
ated Thursday that his team is
a decided threat to score an up-
set.
'Best Looking'
"This is Canada's best looking
team in years," said Macken, a
former Davis Cup player.
- Fauquier, 23, from Toronto, the
unofficial team leader, is no stran-
ger to U.S. tennis. He was cap-
tain of last year's Michigan team
and played through the Florida
and Caribbean tours this year.
McKinley, the lone U.S. Davis
Cup played, was due last night
from New York.
