He declined to describe how he transmitted the $160 collected during the fall to the NLF. And while he gave the NLF money, Nadel said, he is confident that it was spent for, medical sup- plies and not weapons. "Their need for medical supplies is des- perate," he said of the Front, add- ing that he had been assured by an NLF delegate that the money had gone for supplies. He added that the propaganda value in the South associated with medical supplies donated "by your friends in the United States" would be far greater than donat- ed weapons-and "Uncle Sam has provided enough weapons for years to come" through losses. And even if the donated money, or an equivalent amount which is "freed" by Nadel's activities, can now be devoted to buying guns by the NLF, Nadel is unconcerned. II o :,, 1 ? , .. Figure quoted above is averoge of all test runs. It's Mr. Johnson's responsibility that American troops are in Viet Nam, and it's his responsibility if they get hurt," he said. But Nadel also said that, in terms of what he could and should do, medical supplies are "more ap- propriate" to give than military supplies. "Far be it from me to say that the NLF should lay down their arms. But I felt it was more im- portant for me to aid them by non-military mans. The liberation struggle is one the Vietnamese must win for themselves," he said, And he added that, far from ac- tivities like his being subversive, as the committee's proposed bill offered by Rep. Joe R. Pool (D- Tex) suggests, "President Johnson is the real traitor-a traitor to everything America has stood for perhaps for our suppression of the Philippines or the Ameri- can Indian. As Senator Robert Kennedy said, he'd give blood to the Viet Cong because it is in the best of American tradition to give blood to anybody who needs it." Despite his reference to Sen. Kennedy, Nadel nevertheless re- jects the idea that "you have to participate in electoral politics to have a lot of influence on it. We're not going to compromise our ideals by trying to gain wider sup- port for them. "If we were able to achieve progress in Viet Nam by support- ing such types as Robert Kennedy, who say our policy in Viet Nam is the wrong way to stop communism at, this time in this place, we might very well discover we were supporting people who would try that policy elsewhere - like the Dominican Republic or Peru," Nadel commented. "Besides, we have goals in the country which Roberlt Kennedy doesn't stand for," he declared. S 4 " # tee' ..
