Market Breaks 10 Day Slump;
Dow Jones Cimbs 12Points

NEW YORK P') - The stock,
market staged one of the biggest
rallies of the year in heavy trad-
ing yesterday.
Some prices were whittled by.
profit taking near the close.
Glamor stocks and blue chips
joined in the advance which was
considered by some brokers as
mainlya a technical rally from an
oversold condition.
It was the second straight strongĀ°
advance after the market declined
in 10 of 11 sessions.
The DoW Jones. average of 30,
industrials closed at 788.41, up
12.69 points for the day.
The rise came several days after

the end of a ten-day period of
decline.
Analysts say that high interest
rates have lured investors from
stocks to other, better yielding
forms of investment. Wage and
price increases and threats of un-
ion-management conflicts in'sev-
eral industries have contributed
to the uncertainty of stock buying
in August.
August also has seen .a decline
-in homebuilding. Building con-
tracts are off 25 per cent. Builders
say they can't find financing for
.construction, and potential hoTne
buyers say they cannot find mort-
gage funds for high down pay-
ment and interest charges.

Congress has voted funds to re-
plenish the dried-up mortgage
market, but there were no signs
through August of decreases in ei-
ther building or financing costs.
Analysts attribute the two days
of stock market strength to in-
creased short covering: buying of
stock to repay stocks previously
bought. They see this development
in increased buying of glamor
stocks. Sales of more moderate
stocks, which usually reflect mar-
ket conditions better than big-
name stocks, were unchanged.
