After the 11-5 vote Thursday night (Nov. 17) coun- cil president Edward N. Robinson, '67, emphasized that SGC is "not breaking from the University community. Rather, we are trying to move into closer contact with that community by utilizing the channels of communi- cation that already exist, and by crossing the artificial barriers that may now exist among the segments of the University community." The council declared that it was making the break to "best act as the representative of the student body in the decision-making process of the University, and to build an educational community of students, faculty and adminstrators working for best interest of the University." The action resulted from the refusual of Richard L. Cutler, U-M vice president for student affairs, to sus- .fl lD wRh pend the so-called sit-in ban pending discussion of it with students. SGC contends that imposition of the ban was one of many actions taken without consultation with the students. SGC has 'not opposed the ban itself, which forbids protest activities that disrupt the work- ings of the University. In withdrawing from OSA, SGC pledged to "work in cooperation with existing faculty and administrative bodies, as with all members of the University com- munity." Robinson expressed hope of building with the fac- ulty and administration a stronger position for SGC so that it may better represent students when it feels able to return to the policies and procedures of OSA. "We are asking," stressed Robinson, "that all stu- dents, faculty, and administrators join with us in work- ing together for the kind of unified community which will best serve the interests of education, and there- fore the University."
