. PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 1966 PAQE TWO TIlE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 20. 1968 New York Opera's 'Traviata' Outstanding Gargoyle Potpourri Occasionally Funny By MARK R. KILLINGSWORTH Editor Violets still died of consumption in the final act, but the New York City Opera's. performance of "La Traviata" in Hill. Aud. last night ended on a note of triumph never- theless. General- Director Julius Rudel combined an exceptionally able orchestra (a, rare thing in opera performances. here) -and some glittering singing talent >to make Verdi's venerable tale of Violetta Velery's love for Alfredo Germont a powerful one still. Patricia Brooks, as Violetta, a society coquette whose love for Alfredo changes. her frivolous life, was exceptionally good. From her first arias,: "Ahl ,fors' e lui" and "Sempre libera," to her final sad threnody in Act IV,. Miss, Brooks shone. She has striking control, and .can turn the strongest forte into a chilling pianissimo. While at times her tone grew flat and somewhat nasal, her singing was highly mov- ing and effective, and her acting was completely convincing. Jerry LoMonaco, as Alfredo, was a somewhat timid and unforceful suitor of Violetta in the first sev- eral acts-a restraint which ham- pered the impact of his otherwise. well-sung arias, 'Libiamo" and "Di Miei Bollenti Spiriti" (which, after all, is about "impulsive ecstasies"). As the opera progressed, how- ever, so did LoMonaco's style, and by the Third Act, when he con- fronts his rival, Baron Dauphol (William Beck), he is an entirely believable jealous lover. One wish- es Alfredo had as much power in the first two acts as he displayed in the last two. Georgio Germont, sung by Dom- inic Cossa, completes the trio of power of the performances of the major characters as Alfredo's father, who tells a sorrowful Vio- letta she must break off her; "scandalous" affair with Alfredo to protect the honor of the Ger- mont family-whose daughter is about to be wed. Cossa sang a masterful "Pura siccome" to Violetta and an equal- ly moving "Di provenza il mar" to Alfredo, and both his singing and acting added considerably to the performance. He combines tech- nical . mastery over the difficult role of Old Germont with a style imbued with passion and, like Miss Brooks, he has a compelling way with dynamics... The minor characters - Beck, Muriel Greenspon as Flora Ber-' voix, Charlotte Povia as Annina, and Oldyna Dynowska and Arthur Faria, the two solo dancers at Act III's Bal Masque-enhanced the leading singers.$ t 4 / 1 f i i t -L , .FF I.
