THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, x.966 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PACV Nl.wp' DeterminedStincic:ichian Star in the] ra ing ^,, By GRAYLE HOWETT t For guys like Rick Volk and Carl Ward the reason is clear why they subject their bodies to such pinball machine treatment everyday. They like the weather in January out in Pasadena. How do they know? They've been there before. But for guys like sophomore de- fensive end Tom Stincic goals be- come secondary; he's too busy learning the ropes. "Goals? I'll tell you about my goals after -the season," Stincic says. "This is the first Big Ten season I've ever experienced. I'll be better qualified after it's all over." Stincic, the rangy 6'3", 217- pound Clevelander, has managed to best the rookie jinx and has started every game. "Sure, it's tough to start a sophomore," de- fensive line coach Y C McNease stated, "but in Tom's case it's dif- ferent. His ability more than makes Vp for his lack of exper- ience. All you have to do is look at the statistics and notice his im- provements from game to game." 'Big Plays' All right, let's look at the sta- tistics. Against Oregon State ,he made three assists; against Calil- fornia, one tackle and four assists; against North Carolina, four tac- kles, . five assists, and one ,"big play" (he dumped quarterback Danny Talbot for a loss); against Michigan State, two tackles and eight assists; and last week, against Purdue, seven tackles, four assists, three big plays, and one RBI (he partially blocked a punt). The press box statistics don't tell the whole story though. The coaches rank the players with a percentage grade, refering to the number of good plays out of the total plays participated in. For the first five games his respective scores were 77 per cent, 60 per cent, 73 per cent, 86 per cent, and 87 per cent, where a score of 70 per cent is considered good enough fn i- Although Stincic has started every game he didn't inherit the right end position when he be- came a sophomore, even with the credential of the John Maulbetsch Award given to the freshman demonstrating capacity for lead- ership and success. Despite being a bust on the banquet tour, Stincie more than makes up for it around the team. "He's not a holler guy," McNease noted, "but he's definitely the . leader type. The reason why is because he always hustles. I've s - never seen him loaf. He's always been easy to teach."
