SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1966 TOTE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FIVE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9,1966 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FIVE Color Change In Male Shoes Shoes for the male college stu- dent are generally stable in style. The basic form of footwear at the University is (to no surprise) the loafer. Cordovan loafers are as appealing as ever to the well- dressed collegian. However, brown styles are making a comeback, ac- cording to the local merchants. They report that a year ago they couldn't sell brown ones "if they had to," but now they are selling quite well. The moccasins gener- ally have handsewn fronts. The plain tongue slip-ons are suitable, but the "modified-penny" front is still the overall favorite. Turning to more formal wear, another "returnee" is being worn again. This is the wingtip model. Selection of these shoes also in- dicates a preference for the color cordovan. Brogues in olive, black, and dark brown are also being frequently bought. A new aspect for the classic wingtip is corfam. This new ma- terial for shoe uppers is man- made. Its selling points are com- fort and ease of care. Models us- ing this synthetic are lighter and flex with the foot. By resisting scuffs and water, corfam shoes are cleaned and shined simply by wiping with a soft cloth. With the advent of more win- try weather, boots are a final ca- tegory of a Michigan student's footwear. Snow and rain are hard on any shoe. Therefore, "floaters" featuring a crepe sole and suede uppers can withstand most any walking hazard. IT APPEARS THAT men's footwear has not been changing much over the years. Here we see our model admiring the age old student favorite, the classic brown or cordovan "Weejun." New ino- vations in the field of footwear have been centered mostly upon boots. IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT NO fashionable man's wardrobe can be complete without a wide selection of headgear. For the stylish discotheque or casual wear around campus, "mod" caps are being seen in a great variety of colors and materials. Large, round golf style caps in bold check patterns are also quite popular these days. WILD'S has a Styles Rely on Past WLD (hA As many historians have noted, there is something to be said for the hypothesis that certain trends in world events tend to be re- peated over the years. It seems that many fashion designers have used this principle in preparing many of the new fashions. Much of the so-called "mod" fashion is, in reality, based upon styles from another era. Naturally enough the use of ' "old-fashioned" styles has spread into both the world of men's and women's fashions. One of the most popular periods which mo- dern fashion designers have drawn from is the Twenties and Thirties. The influence of this period is being seen in many of the dresses and suits being worn by stylish women of today. Perhaps the most outstanding example of this trend today is the reintroduction of the double- breasted suit. Where previously this type of clothing could only be seen on late night movies, it is being found increasingly on fa- shionable businessmen as well as on the college campus. Walk into any clothing store on campus and you will find the double breasted suit being displayed more and more prominently. It seems that the look of the Twenties and Thirties is coming back to the campus. It is not quite the same as the look of that period. The new dou- ble-breasted suits are not as bulky *3 and have narrower lapels and sleeker lines, but the fact that the look of the Twenties is there can- not be denied. The shoulders are natural as opposed to the padded look of yesteryear. The use of sidevents has increased the com- fort and practicality of the mo- del. The double-breasted suit can be found in a variety of conser- vative, dark woolen fabrics in mo- dels ranging from two-button to six-button. Styles like history are repeating themselves. The double-breasted suit, once thought to be as "out" as the Edsel, is now coming back in profusion. Even the accessories that go with it sch as the wide patterned ties and flowery hand- kerchiefs, date back to the Twen- ties and Thirties. Fashion is a constantly building process like 1 history, but we can see that it too must rely on the past.- Levi s Galore for Gals and Guys SLIM-FITS ...............................$4.98 SLIM-FIT STA-PREST ............. .........$5.98 S-T-R-E-T-C-H ...........................$5.98 .
