AV VV THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6,1966 TIlE MICHIGAN DAILY PA flU' mu'vu,,.r rr v oc, 'r.tr M Drabowsky Fans Favored Dodgers -L 0 OK By The Associated Press 1 LOS ANGELES-Moe Drabow-I sky, a part time stock broker who almost quit baseball last winter, tied one World Series record by striking out six men in a row and broke another by whiffing 11 in relief yesterday while pitching Baltimore to a 5-2 opening game triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers.. Drabowsky's six straight equal- led a mark set by Cincinnati's Hod Eller against the Chicago White Sox in 1919, the year of the in- famous Black Sox scandal. His 11 strikeouts broke the 1921 high set by Jess Barnes of the New York Giants against the New York Yankees. Homer Happyr Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinsonmbombed Don Drysdale with home runs in a three-run first inning, but Dave McNally couldn't stand the rich diet. Once again, as has been his habit all season, Hank Bauerhhad to dig into his bullpen to save the day. The 31 - year - old Drabowsky, picked up in the draft last winter, allowed only one hit in 62/a innings. In the fourth and fifth, the Polish- born right-hander struck out the side. Until Moe turned in this super effort in the warm California sun- shine, he was more famous for negative statistics-like giving up Stan Musial's 3,000th hit, the hit that helped Early Wynn win his j%300th game or leading the league in hit batsmen. Never Knew "Did I tie it?" Drabowsky asked reporters in the clubhouse. "I didn't know anything about it. Usually, I'm in the record book on the other side. "If Baltimore hadn't drafted me, I probably would have retired. But . OBiloar d There will be a pep rally for the Michigan-Michigan State game on the Diag at 7 p.m. to- night. Koufax clinched the pennant for the Dodgers in the final game of the season last Sunday in Phil- adelphia. Palmer pitched the clincher for the Orioles Sept. 22,! and they eased home a nine-game winner in the American League. Hank Bauer strode to the mound and waved to the bullpen for Drabowsky. Moe relieved some of the pressure by striking out Wes Parker but then got too careful with Jim Gilliam and lost him on a 3-2 count, walking in a run. Drabowsky went. to 3-2 on John Roseboro before he made him foul, out to Etchebarren, leaving three frustrated Dodgers on the bases. In the fourth inning, Jim Bar- bieri, leading off for pitcher Joe Moeller, also worked the count to 3-2 before striking out. Maury Wills and Willie Davis then did the same. The fifth inning found Drabow- sky tying the record by whiffing Johnson, Davis, and Lefebvre. Parker finally broke the strike- out string with a fly ball to Curt Blefary to open the sixth. In all, Drabowsky retired 11 in- a row from the time he walked Gilliam in the third until he walk- ed Wills in the seventh. Only Hitj The only hit off the veteran right-hander was Willie Davis' single, following the walk to Wills. Coming down the stretch, he ap- peared to get stronger. In the ninth inning, he closed out the favored Dodgers by striking out Roseboro and pinch hitter Ron Fairly and making Wills bounce out to end the game. The much-maligned Baltimore pitching staff came through as expected with a brilliant bullpen save, and the power lived up to its advance billing. After the home run bombs by the Robinson boys in the first, and the second inning run, the Orioles added their fifth and final Attention Contact Lens Wearers Save 35% On Wetting Solution Nichoson -MfC Sales, 25 Years Riding Experience 13 Years Racing Experience Ray and Roy 6 Veteran, Full Time Mechanics With Racing Experience Second Oldest Dealer in Ann Arbor Best Equipped Service Dept.
