And back in the Beaver locker Pifer lost another fumble later room Peter Pifer picked a peck of in the third quarter, giving St. prickly pears, prickly pears, prickly Joe's the opportunity to page Dr.'pears. Ovation Inexperience Both Wilhite and Clancy were working against four men in the Oregon State secondary who had never.- played a college football game before yesterday. The OSU system of rotating their backs with the flow of the play, according to Vidmer, "really asks a lot of! those guys. And against an end like Clancy, well . . ." The sentenceI just hung there because everyone listening knew that Vidmer's smilej told the rest of the story. Hard Chaw The Michigan defense must have made the Beavers think that they, were gnawing on petrified logs all afternoon. The only real dam- age the Wolverines suffered was at the hands of shifty-running Paul Brothers. Michigan concen- trated its preparation on stopping Brothers' -sweeps, but the veteran of two Wolverine drubbings still carried the ball for 58 of OSU's 127 yards on the ground. Highly- touted fullback Peter Pifer was held to 14 yards on four carries in the first half, but managed, to amass 46 for the day. In addi- tion to stopping the Beavers cold in key situations, the defense re- peatedly gave the offense the ball in good field position. Playful Defender After two preliminary shots at the Beaver line the first time Michigan had the ball, Vidmer hit Clancy for 49 yards, and after that the only thing that stopped the balanced offense was a play- ful German shepherd that halted play near the Oregon State goal on two occasions. After the dog Detwiler received a tremendous ovation when he entered in the middle of the second quarter on a fourth and one situation at the Oregon State 21. Detwiler pulled in a Vidmer pitchout, but was un- able to turn the corner at right end as he was pulled down for a two yard loss. While the burly halfback showed that he can play now, it appears as if he will be- come a more potent offensive weapon as his knee strengthens. In the meantime Ernie Sharpe is solidifying a hold on that spot. Sharpe lugged the ball 16 times and picked up 56 yards on the: ground and looked particularly good on power sweeps. Pile-driving Dave Fisher "really, hurt us on that power sweep,". according to OSU Coach Dee An- dros. He added, "We worked against that play all week, but we still couldn't stop it." The "Fish" (15 pounds less than last season) proclaimed after the game that he felt so good that he "could play another game just like that one right now." Key on Fisher Offensive line coach Tony Ma- son commented on Fisher's work saying, "They were keying real heavily on Dave in the first quar-s ter. Once, we saw this we began to fake to him more and use the halfbacks." Fisher did carry the ball 11 times and scored the sec- ond and third Michigan touch- downs. The offensive quintet rolled up an impressive 502 yards for the day. -Dally-Frank wing JOHN ROWSER (43), 183-POUND DEFENSIVE HALFBACK, and Frank Nunley (59), a 218-pound linebacker, slam into Ore- gon State halfback Bob Grim (26). Different Story Vidmer mixed his plays well, and almost anything worked. "We worked on the plays they used all week," said Oregon State coach Dee Andros. "We stopped them in practice, but it was a different story out there today." Michigan's 502 yards on offense substantiate Andros' post-game comment. Vidmer's co-hero, Clancy, did his share of the damage. Clancy picked off 10 of Vidmer's aerials for 197 total yards, setting Wol- verine records for receptions and yardage on passes in one game. Clancy was able to spot weak- nesses in the Beavers' defense pat- tarns early in the game, and thus was in the open most of the time. Several times he changed his pat- ,f k tern as he ran it to evade de- " fenders. And when the defense. .. . Better Days "That felt good," Clancy smiled when it was over. Remembering his halfback days of the past,~ Clancy added, "I like it much bet- ter this way-when I get the ball I can move." Vidmer and Clancy worked out on pass patterns once or twice a day throughout the summer in preparation for the new season. "We had Rick Volk and Mike Bass to defend against us," Clancy commented. "I was happy. if I caught two or three against them.'" The Wolverine secondary was praised by the coaches of both teams. Combined efforts broke up four pass plays and nailed Oregon State carries for losses three times.
