Going into the heavyweight di- vision the East was down, 17-14, but Porter, last year's NCAA champ, came through with a stun- ning pin to defeat Curly Culp, this year's crown-bearer from Arizona State, in 3:38. Culp, who had bragged at the nationals that he "would have beaten Porter "if he had met him them, was "at it again" last night, according to Keen, but Porter silenced him in the best way pos- sible. Draw for Fehrs Two other Wolverine grapplers were featured in earlier matches. Bob Fehrs, who had been desig- nated co-captain of the East squad along with Lehigh's Mike Caruso, met Rich Sanders of Portland State, captain of the Westerners, .: b ;e :'ii.# r: :'#' %t'#.} =.{: MINNEAPOLIS - Army Cpl. John Clawson, former starter for Michigan's Big Ten basket- ball champions of 1965-66, poured in 18 points to pace the Armed Forces to an 85-68 crushing upset of the AAU in the Pan-American trials last night. at 123. Sanders, this year's 115- pound champ and Outstanding Wrestler at the NCAA's, was held to a 2-2 draw in what Keen term- ed "an outstanding performance." Jim Kamman, Michigan's NCAA champ at 125, meanwhile, lost an 8-7 heartbreaker to Lee Ehrler of UCLA. "Jim was leading with sec- onds to go," Keen related, "when Ehler got a reversal for two points and three more for a near fall. At the end, Jim was awarded a point in riding time, but lacked just two seconds for a second point which would have tied it." Robie, Kingery Place in AAU's Special To The Daily . Spitz also won the 100-yard . butterfly with a time of 0:49.9, and thus became the first man in history to break 50 seconds in that event. Kingery placed fifth in the 200- yard backstroke with a time of 1:58.7. The winning time was 1:54.4 by 6'9" USC freshman Mark Mader. SPORTS NIGHT EDITOR: HOWARD KOHN HELP WANTED CONN.
