University of Michigan Grounds: The
University of Michigan Grounds Dept.
is going to start spraying elm trees
along streets and parking lots on
campus.
Spraying will be done on relatively
windless days, when temperatures are
320 or above. The areas to be sprayed
will be posted the day before spraying
takes place.
One general application will be need-
ed before the bird nesting season be-
gins.
Mist application during this early
spring period wil give the best con-
trol of bark beetles which spreads
Dutch elm disease.
The spray will not harm the enamel
of cars. If spray mist should settle
on a car, the owner should use a com-
mercial cleaner polish to remove the
residue, just soap and water will not
remove the spray.
Depending on weather conditions the
spraying will take between 2%, to 3
weeks.

Carson Quits at NBC
For Contract Breach

By The Associated Press
Johnny Carson announced Tues-
day he was quitting the "Tonight"
show because NBC was substitut-
ing old tapes of the program dur-
ing his absence in the current
strike of the American Federation
of Radio and Television Artists.
He called this breach of his
contract.
The network took the opposite
view and said it expected Carson
to return after the strike to a
program that pays him $500,000
to $780,000 a year.
Technicians walked off some
jobs at ABC and NBC yesterday
in support of a strike by radio
and television performers against
the three major networks. There

The technicians quit following
a meeting of eight unions in the
entertainment field. They voted
support for the strike of 18,000
members of the AFTRA which en-
tered its second week yesterday.
Hopeful of a mass walkout by
the other network unions, AF-
TRA's executive secretary, Donald
F. Conaway, said: "If this doesn't
shut down the networks, it will
surely slow them down."
The networks have kept live
newscasts on the air by using
supervisory employes in place of
big-name news announcers. Where
entertainment shows have been
knocked off, taped reruns of old
programs have been substituted.
Picket lines along Sixth Ave-
nue's network row in Manhattan
have included some of the coun-
try's best-known television per-
sonalities. Joining them for the,
first time yesterday was John
Daly, moderator of the CBS quiz
show, "What's My Line," and
son-in-law of Chief Justice Earl
Warren.
