By The Associated Press DETROIT-Joe Schmidt, once rated the best middle linebacker, in the National Football League,- yesterday signed a five-year con- tract to try to coach the Detroit Lions back to being the best club in the loop. Schmidt, an eight-time NFL All- Pro selection during his 13 years as a Lion player, signed after studying for two days a contract offered Monday by Lion owner William Clay Ford. "I feel we have 15 or 16 good football players that I want on my club," Schmidt said. "We'll definitely have to make some trades." Free. Hand Schmidt said he has a free hand to make trades and other moves. He said it will take some time to decide on his assistants. The contract given the 34-year- old Schmidt reportedly calls for something in the neighborhood of, $50,000 a year. Schmidt, who retired after the 1965 season, replaces Harry Gil- mer, fired last Friday after two losing seasons. Gilmer's teams won only 10 of 28 games in two years. Schmidt was an assistant to Gil- mer last year, working with the linebackers. . * * NBA Picks San Diego SAN DIEGO, Calif.-San Diego was named yesterday to have the 12th team in the National Basket- ball Association. Commissioner J. Walter Kenne- dy made the announcement and said the team will begin operat- ing in the 1967-68 season. "We're just as happy as we can; be to have San Diego in the NBA," Kennedy said. "Our expansion committee believes that San Diego gave the best presentation of any city seeking the franchise." The ownership of the new team is scheduled to be announced with- in 24 hours. The San Diego team will play in the new San Diego Internation- al Sports Arena. Kennedy said that a profession- al player pool will be created from which San Diego and Seattle - the two new NBA teams - will draft a total of 15 players. The new teams will take three players from each of the 10 NBA teams. Cost of the franchise was $1.75 million. . * . Eckert Elevates McHale NEW YORK - John McHale, the rosy-cheeked Irish-man who retired as a player at 26 years of age because "I couldn't hit curve balls," became baseball's second in command yesterday when he was named Administrator to Com- missioner William D. Eckert. McHale, now 45, left his post as president and general manager of the Atlanta Braves in succeed- ing Lee MacPhail as Eckert's right-hand man. "I was not disenchanted in At- lanta," McHale said. "I consider this job a promotion from the ball club level." Eckert said McHale's contract is for three years.
