It ended with the press conference of Robber Wright Fleming, newly chos- en successor to University President Harlan Hatcher. But there were a lot of "happen- ings" in between those two well-planned events. Many University honor stu- dents sat inside Hill Auditor- ium yesterday .and heard U Thant, secretary-general of the United Nations and fea- tured speaker for the Honors, Convocation, deliver an ad- dress on education. Other hon- ors students were picketing in protest of the Vietnam war outside tPe auditorium along with Ann Arbor residents. Later University President Harlan Hatcher and U Thant left Hill to attend a luncheon held in the League accompan- ied by Ann Arbor police and followed by those students who had been picketing. Robben Wright Fleming, newly chosen successor to Uni- versity President H a r 1 a n Hatcher, fielded reporters' questions on student-adminis- tration relations, academic and political freedom and University policy towards la- bor unions at his first Ann Arbor press conference yester- day. Fleming defended the right of students to dissent in a con- ference that was interrupted several times by students who demanded the right to ques- tion Fleming and Regent Rob- ert Briggs (R-Jackson) before the press. "You cannot have a great university without dis- sent," Fleming said. "I have always protected dissenters." He added that he has gen- erally come into conflict with dissenters only when they in- terfere with other functions of the university.
