Sloan drilled in 32 points as the Bulls took the driver's seat in their battle with the Pistons for the final playoff position in the divi- sion. Sloan led a third period Chi- cago explosion that sent. the Bulls ahead 77-73 by the period's end. Baskets by Reggie Harding and Dave Bing twice pulled Detroit to within three points of the Bulls before a jumper from 20 feet by Jerry Ward with 45 seconds re- maining put the game out of reach. Bing had 28 points for Detroit. * * * CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Royals almost blew a seven-point lead in the last minute and ten seconds but managed to hang on for an 112-108 victory over Boston in a National Basketball Associa- tion game last night. The Royals were on the way to their first victory over the Celtics this season when Larry Siegfried's jump shot cut their margin to 108-103. Free throws by Jerry Lucas and Len Chappell made it 110-107 with 11 seconds left and then Siegfried sank a free throw for Boston. Os- car Robertson finished the scor- ing by sinking two free throws, running his string to 34 in a row. The score was tied 59-59 at intermission and Cincinnati pull-' ed ahead for good halfway through the third period. Robert- son led all players with 31 points and 15 assists while John Havlicek paced Boston with 30. * * * BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Bullets rallied each time New York pulled within striking distance and whipped the Knickerbockers 121- 114 last night in a National Bas- ketball Association game. The loss dumped the Knicks into fourth place in the Eastern Division, one game behind the Cincinnati Royals. Baltimore rallied for the last time after the Knicks moved to within 109-105 with less than two minutes remaining. Kevin Loughery, who led the Bullets with 29 points, then sank two free throws and Johnny Egan connected on a three-point play to stretch Baltimore's advantage to 114-105 with 1:24 left. Walt Bellamy had 32 points and 29 rebounds, while Willis Reed scored 31 points for New York.
