SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1967 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE NINE SUNDAY, FEBRUAR 19, 197 -H MCIGN-AL BLOW EARLY LEAD: Cagers Fall Apart Befor By HOWARD KOHN Dave Strack said it simply, in a' voice deadened by defeat: "This game is a five-man operation. Most of the time we're trying to run on three cylinders." No one in the locker room dis- agreed. Michigan lost again yesterday,, 97-85 to Ohio State. In a far corner, Craig Dill sat staring at the floor as if it were trying to fall out from under him. His younger brother, flashing a copy of the stat sheet, walked gamely up: "Great game, Craig. You did all right." Dill said nothing. Plopped Even for Dill, who plopped in a career high of 28 points, there was little to say. And for Strack . "What can I say?" asked Strack. "Of course, I'm very disappointed. There weren't many bright spots." "What about Dill?" a reporter countered. "Im not trying to pick on any- one. But it's hard to be jovial over anyone's performance." It was only the Wolverines' sec- ond loss this season at Yost Field- house, and only their fourth in four years. But it plummeted them to a 2-6 Big Ten record. Ohio State, the only conference team with a winning road record, is 4-5. Dill's opening three-point play i shot Michigan into a quick lead which it controlled for most of the first half. By the time Bob Sulli- van entered the game with eight minutes to go in the half, the Wolverines had upped their mar- gin to 28-22. Discrete FeetI "We got off to the wrong foot in the first half. But Michigan didn't take full advantage of the opportunity," spoke up Ohio State coach Fred Taylor. After Dennis Stewart's jumper with 6:14 left, Michigan couldn't hit for another field goal in the half. At 1:10, crew-cut Bill Hos- ket's charity toss caught the Wolverines at 35-35. His bonus shot put the Bucks in control. The half ended at 36-36, and then Hosket canned one from the corner'to start the second 20 min- utes. And, despite an ephemeral 45-42 Michigan lead which lasted nearly a minute, the rest was anti-climactic. Errors "We mishandled the chances we had to stay in the game," sigh- ed Strack. Typically enough, m i d w a y through the second half Dave McClellan stepped in front of fast- pedaling Jeff Miller and took the ball away on the bounce. He pass- ed downcourt to Ken Maxey who fed the ball to Stewart at the key. Stewart took two steps and lost the ball to three waiting Buck- eyes.
