The school is based on a philo- sophy of freedom for children, Kids are allowed to make their own decisions about what they will and won't do in the school, for only in this way can the curisoity and spontanaity that are each childs be-maintained so that growth can be a natural process, The school's central technique for teaching is to relate subjects to real experiences and real desires. For example, reading is taught by allowing kids who bring their words to the teachers who then put them on vacabulary cards for the kids. In this way reading is seen as important, vital and necessary. The Children's Community meets currently in the basement of the Friends' Center five mornings a week. Kids 4-7 years old attend the school, anl there are plans to expand to another grade next year. 4 "The crucial lack of our society is not opportunity but intimacy." -Edgar FriedAberg -4 I 9 "It is nothing short of a miracle that the modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry; for this delicate little plant, aside from stimulation, stands mainly in need of freedom; without this it goes to wrack an ruin without fail." -Albert Einstein "The Defense Deparrwcnt is the sinzle largest educational complex tha th_ world has ever possessed." - Rob; rt M>c:r va. 4 *j { :
