The current success of the Mich-
igan hockey team surprises a lot
of people.,
The most surprised of all could
be other WCHA hockey teams,
like North Dakota. The Great
Plains powerhouse figured to waltz
away with the league title this
season-to their own tune. A
couldn't-miss combination of re-
turning lettermen, a rugged style
of play, and a home igloo, which
isn't so friendly to the Nodaks as
it is unfriendly to all visitors,
marked them as a favorite.
Came the first weeliends in Jan-
uary the Nodaks tripped over Min-
nbsota-Duluth, leaving the door
open for Michigan to step into the
lead. A couple weeks later the Wol-
verines mashed a first-division
Colorado College club in the Rock-
Snow
les' thin air to put themselves
firmly in the top spot.
In the midst of success, Michi-
gan hockey Coach Al Renfrew
thinks that the WCHA is the best
college hockey league in the coun-
try. "A WCHA team is going to
take the NCAA championship tour-
nament this year," says Renfrew.
An avid reader wouldn't be able
to tell that, though, by reading
the eastern papers. Teams like Cor-
nell and Boston U. dominate their
thinking. Of course, there is no
mention of WCHA teams.
And, though he doesn't specify,
you get the impression that Ren-
frew's WCHA national champion
may very well be Michigan.
A WCHA title doesn't mean
much in the post season scramble
for the NCAA tournament. Teams,
like Denver have already given up

Wolverine gymnast Wayne Mil-
ler is in University Hospital after
spraining both ankles at practice
Tdessda s.
Miller, World and NCAA cham-
pion trampolinist, suffered the in-
jury while practicing floor exer-
cise. According to gymnastics
coach Newt Loken he landed
wrong after doing a backwards
somersault At first it was feared
b that both of Miller's ankles were
broken, but X-rays taken at the
hospital have proven negative,
Ironically Miller's injury came
just after fellow trampolinist Dave
Jacobs had recovered from a
sprain to one ankle last week.
Jacobs and Miller rank one and
two in the nation in the tram-
poline event.
Miller, junior from Lafayette,
Louisiana, is expected to be side-
lined for at least two weeks by
the injury, which would leave
him definitely out of the meet
against Eastern Michigan here
SFriday, February 10.
Loken said it was questionable
whether Miller would be ready in
time for the crucial meet with
Michigan State in Ann Arbor on
Wednesday the 15th. Both Michi-
gan and Michigan State are un-
deafted in Big Ten play, and win
against the Spartans is almost es-
sential if the Wolverines are to
capture a seventh straight Big
Ten championship.
Jacobs alone, however, gives the
Wolverines a good shot at a Tram-
sophomore from Amarillo, Texas,
poline victory against State. The
holds every major world tram-
poline title that Milles does not.
Loken indicated that Jacob's
ankle, though stillntender, should
be in top shape in time' for the
State meet.
Following the meet against
State, the gymnasts journey on
February 18th to Minneapolis for
a. dual encounter with Minnesota
and Wisconsin.
