Friday morning is the final day of publication for The Michiga n wily (Continued from Page 1) ies literature, art, law, music, ar- chitecture and history which were decisively swayed by religion. Many students who claim to ac- cept Christianity (and many who reject it) merely retain vague as- sociations of general prohibitions such: as the ten commandments and fairy-like tales of shepherds, sheep and a hygienic manger at Christmas. Perhaps equally as important in an age of attempted cross-cultural communication is a general lack of understanding of other religions around the world, It also appears that the aver- age student displays a general in- ability to be able to articulate his own moral and spiritual values. In the past the church has been given the entire burden of reli- gious education while being dis- regarded by those who need that education. The reason may be that the church not only seeks to help the student articulate his values but also seeks to press him toward a certain commitment. On this campus the Office of Religious Af- fairs has served for years as a neutral ground for education in religion. It appears that in the future, through the possible establishment of an institute for the advanced study of religion, the University will increase its share of the re- sponsibility of education in reli- gion. The commission which pro- posed the establishment of that institue stated, "The increasing ignorance of the nature of religion manifest in such attitudes as the limitation of religion to the acti- vities of religious institutions, has contributed to the increasing ig- norance of the basic, presence and meaning of value in America-at a time when the social ethic of the country is under severe stress. Such ignorance, in a country whose standards of education are constantly rising, is not only ano- malous but conducive to an even deeper social and ethical confusion than now exists." for this semester.
