DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN By BETSY COHN In contrast to the mechanically animated figures with which film- makers have saturated the screen the movements of man are per- formed with natural grace and beauty. Thankfully, there are some who are still able to capture the simplicity of man with skill and sensitivity. Satyajit Ray portrays drama, poetry, and ballet in "Two Daughters." He uses no gimmicks, no photo tricks; only human forms, climate, mud, and the haunting melodies of Indian music. The first of the two film epi- sodes takes place in the small village of Ulapar. A Postmaster, his little servant girl, a madman and four townspeople are the ma- jor characters: each has an oppo- sition, loneliness, age, malaria and loyalty. The art is expressed through characters: they each say few words yet the viewer knows each person and knows them well; by their expressions, their motions and by the continuous camera focus on their eyes. The second episode employs' more plot, action and humor, Amlya, a young law student, re- turns from college and must ful- fill a promise to his mother that he will marry the girl of her choice. Mamma choses a mummi- fied loser (Pooty) and both are scorned with great disdain by the dissatisfied Amulya. Naturally, he falls in love with the town tom-boy, tree-climbing, black sheep Puglee. The rest of the scene is devoted to a wooing- and - taming - of - the - tree - shrew routine. Puglee is finally wed (by force) but escapes her kind spouse by climbing from the bedroom cham- bers on her sacred wedding night, and spends the evening with Chokel (her squirrel) on a swing. This proves too much for the hero who follows the road to Calcutta. After family disgrace, days of fasting, and "mamma's" conniv- ing; Amulya returns, Puglee stops swinging and the ending is happy. "Two Daughters" is not recom- mended to those who have become action-packed and hooked on SHOCK. Its novelty is its simplic- ity, and its graceful unfolding of characters. The relief is welcome.
