FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 1966 THE 31ICRIGAN DAILY 'AGE NTNZ TRXDAY, PEBRUARY 25, 1988 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE NIiE ART Maiden's Form Stops Ann Arbor Art Show r *1 By BOBU SCHEAR "The Bra," a black lacy crea- tion by Joan E. Rosenstein, is not a Maidenform advertisement but a painting in the Graduate Art Show on exhibit at Ann Arbor City Hall until March 24. The all- media show, sponsored by the Ann Arbor Art Association, features 14 works of four graduate art stu- dents. Each artist, with the confidence of youth, has ignored traditional restraints and interpreted his me- dium in a new and distinctive way. For example, striking combina- tions of orange and blue, mag- enta, scarlet and green loudly proclaim Joan Rosenstein's indi- viduality. The flat texture of the acrylic paint used by Miss Rosen- stein is partially responsible for the shocking effect of her canvas. Contrasted to the brilliant col- ors and matt surfaces of Miss Rosenstein's work, is "Elephant Parade," a black-and-white lith- ograph by Judith A. Mathieu. The variety of shades, unusual textures. and dramatic effect of light ob- tained by using only black and white was astonishing. An elephant's trunk and a cat appear to jut from the print and enfold the viewer into what ap- pears to be a three-dimensional exotic setting. This is accomplish- ed through unusual perspective and foreground figures which dominate the scene. Chris Overvoorde used another printing method, color Intalgio, in producing his three exhibits. Unlike lithography, stencils and wood-block, color Intalgio is fash- ioned by building up the under- neath surface of the plate with interesting textures, such as pa- per towels, velvet, body solder, and rags. Then these are pasted down with glue or plastic. Different col- or inks are rolled separately onto the plate ,each coating a different part. Working with this medium is an intuitive thing to Overvoorde. He knows what image he wants to create and where he wants texture. Harold Hansen considers his art a personal thing. The meaning of his work "cannot be expressed in words but has an abstract, person- al symbolism." He says he is "not a social commentator." His pictures are usually quite small, 12-15 inches, and so mostly concerned with the design. His main emphasis is on basically gray tones, "not battleship grays but grayish blues and browns."
