LESS EXPENSIVE general atmosphere and especially. the quality of food are two in- fluential aspects of sorority living that make it superior to that of dorm residency. However, since the passage of junior apartment privileges, girls don't have to "go Greek" to get the benefits a soror- ity can offer. Apartments can duplicate and perhaps even sur- pass the smaller more intimate group living situation. As for food, you're your own cook. so if your potatoes come out like mush and your roast has the toughness of a rockthere is no one to blame but yourself. Because apartments can and do offer many of the advantages of sorority living, thesgreek system is experiencing a somewhat new trend. Many of the girls presently in a house have, or are considering de-activating in order to enjoy apartment living. This presents a financial problem to the individual houses as each has a certain quota of girls which must live in the house in order for it to maintain operations on a solvent basis. Al- though some indications of de- activation have been apparent within the past year, the tendency isn't that pronounced or wide- spread as to create any real prob- lems for the sorority system as a whole. Looking at the dorm, a some- what different situation is seen. Since the passage of this new rul- ing, the number of juniors living in the dorm system has decreased greatly. According to some stu- dents this is due not only to the improved living conditions in apartments, but also to the fact that usually apartment living proves less expensive than living in the dorm. This has become even more true since the rates for board and room have been raised. Presently. one pays between about $850-1010 a year living in the dorm. While apartments presently rent anywhere from about $50 per month upwards depending on the quality, size -and newness of the dwelling. The amount spent on food, telephone, electricity and other things also varies according to the individual or individuals in- volved. The important fact, though, is that apartment living offers an opportunity, although it's limited, to regulate the amount its costs a person to ilve in Ann Arbor while attempting to get an education. On the other hand, the dorm system as well as sororities have fixed rates. It costs sormuch a year no matter how many times you have to settle for peanut butter and jelly, or miss out en- tirely on a meal. The portrait of apartment living shouldn't be presented as all per- fect without any flaws. Apart- ments do offer better living con- ditions and more independence, but along with this newfound free- dom they demand more responsi- bility and maturity of junior women. One has the freedom to do what she wantsfi but she also must face the responsibility the consequences of her actions may produce. As of now, the effects of last February's granting of apart- ment privileges are just beginning to be felt. Only time will tell if the freedom and responsibility that goes along with these rights was worth fighting for. And if this new concept in University living is truly an important aspect, as well as incentive, for the learning and maturing processes a college education is supposed to offer.
