FRIDAY, AUGUST 27,1965 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGETEME FRIDAY, AUGUST 27, 1965 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE THREE .L TEMPORARY FOR YEARS: TCB To Be Demolished In Fall The Temporary Classroom Build- ing which has been a permanent fixture behind Health Service and the Dental School for over 25 years will soon be torn down to make room for the expansion of the dentistry facilities. Originally an Army surplus warehouse brought to Ann Arbor at the end of World War II, the building has served in various ca- pacities and contains forgotten remnants of the speech depart- ment's history. Battleship grey walls and ply- wood corridors are lined with pos- ters which were once familiar to every theatre student on campus and which mark the progression of dramatic productions done in Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre from the early 1930's through 1957. Cardboard Partitions When the speech department first moved into the building in 1947 the partitions between the rooms were nothing but cardboard and quite vulnerable to rehears- ing actors. The shellacked posters, now inseparable from the plywood and cardboard, are of great senti- mental value to the University Players and particularly to Prof. William P. Halstead of the speech department who remembers the time and effort they represent. The posters begin with a 1932 production of "The Adding Ma- chine" by Elmer Rice who later, as a visiting lecturer, directed a speech department production of another of his plays,, "Dream Girl." The posters bear the names of dramatists from Aristophanes to Tennessee Williams and the names of stars: Madge Evans, Lillian Gish, Katherine Cornell, Burgess Meredith, and Jose Ferrer among others. Salvage Walls The speech department hopes that arrangements can be made with the literary college to sal- vage two of the walls in the TCB before the building is demolished. Previous efforts to transfer the walls were unsuccessful because the department lacked enough money to replace the plywood. More recently the TCB has been utilized by the Army ROTC as sa headquarters for its offices and classrooms. Separated from the Navy and Air Force ROTC units from 1950 through 1963, the Ar- my shared the building with the dramatists. For the past two years the Center for Research on Conflict Resolution and the Center for Re- search on Social Organization have occupied the building. In the base- ment of the TCB the Conflict Res- olution people have carried on numerous research projects con- conflict and its resolution, nation- alism and internationalism, the Cold, War, arms control and dis- armament, the development of in- ternational agencies and proced- ures, and problems of developing nations. Their publication, "The Journal of Conflict Resolutions," has serv- ed to alert scholars to the field of peace research. The Center con- tinues to conduct seminars in this a field for those who are interested in its work. The Center will now be tem- porarily housed in Perry School until it is moved to a permanent location in the Argus Building. The Center' for Research on So- cial Organization, which will -re- establish itself over the Michigan Theatre, has been involved with the individual research projects of the sociology department. THE TEMPORARY CLASSROOM BUILDING which will be demolished in September was given to the University as a part of a Federal Works Agency project in 1947. The building has most recently housed the Center for Research on Conflict Resolution and the Center for Research on Social Or- ganization. As a temporary structure it has stood for over 25 years. t r ail J' Student Headquarters for MICHIGAN CAMPUS WEAR SWEAT SH I RTS (including special orders for fraternities, sororities, dorms and clubs) L JACKETS 0 'M' BLANKETS FOR SMALL FRY-Sweat Shirts, Suits Sweaters HA ROLD S.
