Chorus Savior of EXAM SCHEDULE MONDAY Exam Handel's By FRITZ.MILLER Hearing Handel's "Messiah," especially at Christmas time, is like seeing an old friend, one who has never grown old. The "Mes- siah"Cas presented this year by the Choral Union consists of a great many of the most familiar airs and choruses from Handel's original work, and it has still not lost its timeless beauty. There is a danger with music as familiar as the "Messiah," that of a performancerelying more on the. reputation than on the pre- sentation; the Choral Union did not make this mistake, and the result was a concert that was, with qualification, pleasant and enjoy- able. These qualifications concern the orchestra and solosist, however, not the Choral Union chorus. Handel wrote the "Messiah", in less than a month, two days of which were spent on the score. Thus the orchestration is secon- dary, part of the background. If this were not so, the concert would not have been quite as enjoyable, for the members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra play- ed at best adequately, and at' times obtrusively. Their orchestration backing the choruses was erratic; for parts, especially the beginnings of each half of the concert, they were ac- ceptable, but toward the end of the first half they became quite sloppy. Many obvious mistakes stuck out, especially in the Pas- toral Symphony and the trumpet solo to the bass' air "The trumpet shall sound." The Mezzo-soprano's airs were much of the time drowned out by the orchestra, although this could have been the fault of the director, Ilessiah' Mr. McCoy, or of the Mezzo- soprano, Miss Mayes. The soprano, Miss Valente, pro- duced crisp, clear, articulate airs, but with such a lack of emotion that one wondered if she were listening to the moving story she was singing. Her runs were some- times incorrectly abbreviated, and she made a sterile impression compared to the other three solo- ists. The Choral Union is a remark- able controlled and polished choir, considering its size (approx. 300) and unprofessional standing. Their performance as a whole was, while not exceptional, certainly more than adequate. The blend was good except in the tenor section. Their attention to both the direc- tor and to the essence of the Messiah's sometimes joyous, some- times tearful theme, was pro- nounced. Most of the choruses were thundering, but in the sev- eral instances where less dynamic selections were included the effec- tive modulations of the chorus were displayel. Considering the concert as a whole, it was the performance of the chorus that almost offset the shortcomings of the orchestra and soloists.
