PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY P A.TOT ,MC I G N D I Y U S A,-O E BR-3 . 6 TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1965 NEW YORK OPERA: 'Barber's' Sets Imaginative; Acting, Staging Both Weak By GLEN LITTONt A few seconds after the curtainf lifted Sunday evening on the Newe York City Opera Company's pro-' duction of "The Barber of Se- ville," the audience's expectations! for an evening of excellent operaF were at their highest.- The orchestra had just finished o a trim performance of Rossini'se overture, marred only by a 50 per cent loss of the orchestra's tonalV depth in the folds of the make-t shift Hill Auditorium proscenium.- The set was impressive, the costumes colorful. The eye couldn't have been more pleased, nor the' mind more certain that this eve-a ning the New York City Operaa Company would present a spiritedt and witty "Barber." Unfortunately, the ultimate test of good opera is not the eye but the ear. Although the lighting and costumes for Sunday night's! production were original, the act- ing was hackneyed and the sing- ing lacked the buoyant spirit and vivacity that Rossini demands. Agility Not Lacking This is not to say that the prin- cipals lacked technical agility. Gene Bullard as Count. AlmavivaI sang with precision but without depth or dramatic inflection. Whether his voice is naturally light, or whether Hill Auditorium demands a Wagnerian tenor in every role, can't be determined, but he was often the loser in battles of volume with the orches- tra. Figaro, played by Dominic Cos- sa, was another principal who lost to the orchestra's propensity ORGANIZATION NOTICES USE OF THIS COLUMN FOR AN- NOUNCEMENTS is available to officially recognized and registered student orga- nizations only.
