State's vaunted wall of steel par-"
alyzed the legs of Notre Dame's
modern Four Horsemen yesterday.

their No. 1 college football ranking.

followed a Jim Summers' inter-
ception on the Irish 19 of a pass
by Bill Zloch, the frustrated Irish

tardo hurling two touchdown pass-

carries, Illinois defeated North-
western 20-6 yesterday to end the
Big Ten football season.
Illinois pushed into a 7-6 lead
in the first quarter. Custardo hit
rookie end John Wright for 15
yards and then speared Cyril
Pinder for a 36-yard touchdown
play. Custardo booted the first of
his two points.
On the first play of the ensuing
kickoff, Northwestern sophomore
Rick Venturi threw his fixst pass
of the season. He connected with
Ron Rector for 25 yards and Rec-
tor broke loose to run 55 more for
a touchdown. The 80-yard play
was a Northwestern all-time aerial
record.
Illinois went ahead 14-6 in the
opening mintues of the second
quarter, capping a 55-yard thrust
with Custardo's 7-yard pitch on
a tackle eligible play to Ed Russell.
The score stood until midway in
the fourth when Custardo's 17-
