Seemingly outplayed and trail- ing 16-6, the unpredictable Bruins sent their followers in a packed coliseum crowd of, 94,085 into a frenzy as Beban connected with his winning throw to Kurt Alten- berg. Just moments before, Beban hurled a 34-yard scoring strike to Dick Witcher to put UCLA in a threatening positiony, trailing by two points, 16-14. Beban threw a two-point conversion on this one to Byron Nelson. Southern California had been favored by five points. The triumph left the Uclans with an over-all record of 7-1-1 and a 4-0 season in the Pacific Athletic Conference and knocked the Trojans to all intents out of the running with a 6-2-1 over-all and a 4-1 conference record. With Washington State, the other Rose Bowl conitender; losing to Washington 27-9, it would ap- pear that a meeting of the con- ference directors to select its bowl representative to play Michigan State would be a mere formality. UCLA was ranked seventh in the latest weekly Associated Press football poll and Southern Cali- fornia fifth. Arkansas Unbeaten; FAYETTEVILLE, Ark-Quarter- back Jon Brittenum and tailback Bobby Burnett led second-ranked Arkansas into the Cotton Bowl yesterday as the Razorbacks scor- ed a 42-24 comeback triumph over ninth-ranked Texas Tech. Brittenum, a oised operator who brought Arkansas from two 10-point deficits, engineered long scoring drives of 68, 72, 53, 73 and 69 yards as the Razorbacks completed their second straight perfect season. The victory snapped Tech's winning streak at seven and ex- tended Arkansas' through 22- longest in the nation by a major college team. Burnett, who slashed through the middle for 83 yards in a third- quarter Razorback rally, scored three touchdowlis on runs of four, one and eight yards. His one- yard plunge put Arkansas ahead the first time, 21-17, early in the third period. Tech's talented passer, Tom Wilson, and All-America halfback Donny Anderson carried the fight for the inspired Raiders. Brittenum, who hit on 14 of 20 passes for 245 yards, threw two touchdown strikes in the fourth quarter, a 10-yarder to Richard Trail and a 24-yarder to Tommy Burnett.
