Built in 1958, the Quirk The - atre is a functional assemblage of three auditoriums, a radio and television studio, classrooms, dress- ing rooms and scene shops~ Work- speech and dramatic arts depart- THE HILLEL CHOIR directed by MIKE ROBBINS JOAN TEMKIN at the organ 1429 Hill Street All Are Welcome ll~ ments from which stems the the- atre and forensic activities of the university. The director of the theatre and the dramatic arts department, Prof. James W. Gousseff, sprinted enthusiastically around the Quirk Theatre followed by this reporter who, in passing, managed to catch a glimpse of a seminar on Greek Iutu ws conducted by Prof. So- lomois, a visiting professor from Greece who will be heading "The Greek Theatre," which is sched- uled to begin operation next year. Different Places Passing the lab theatre, Gous- seff explained how the audience and actors could be placed in six different positions by rearrange- ment of the portable stage and chairs. "One idea never tried be- fore is the placement of the aud- ience in the middle and the stage around them. The audience re- volves in their seats as the action moves from one stage to the next. This is a very revolutionary idea," punned Dr. Gousseff, who, at the same time, sympathized with owners of weak stomachs. This reporter also saw the re- maining scenery of the "EMU Players" recent production of "The Fantasticks," a delicate musical; and saw a ranting Roman soldier, loudly preparing for his appear- ance in "Androcles and the Lion."' It is scheduled for Nov. 20-21 by "EMU's Children's Theatre" pro- duction. Still followed by this reporter, Gousseff darted into the new wing of the building which is preparing to house FM and AM radio sta- wor space for forensic activity.nd Three Groups "There are three operating the- atre groups at EMU," explained Gousseff. "The EMU Players, the Children's Theatre and the lab series which will go into operation this year. The EMU Players have scheduled three more plays after "Androcles" ;"The Physicists," "A Midsummer's Night Dream," and "Ah Wilderness." When questioned about the name QUIRK, Dr. Gousseff attri- buted it to local millionaire, Dan- iel Quirk Jr. whose interest, among his wealth of many, is the the- atre. Scheming officials saw a bright reward in store for them if they would name the theatre after Daniel Jr.; and bright it was: a huge vivid oil painting of the glowing millionaire. "Quite a quirk!" quipped Gousseff.
